Vitalik Buterin Not a fan of simplifying L1s at the expense of L2s

Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of the Ethereum blockchain network, has stated that he does not trust the concept of simplifying “L1, even at the expense of more complicated L2s,” as it is currently unclear whether L2 blockchain networks are better than L1s. .

In a post on social media platform He added:

The challenge is that when you can make a trade-off between the bug risk in L1 and the bug risk in L2, it’s not really clear that the latter is better!

The creator of Ethereum gave the example of a situation where there is a consensus error in a Layer 1 blockchain. In such a case, “things break” and “the core developers scramble for a day,” but eventually everything goes back to normal. However, in the case of an L2 bug, “people can lose a lot of money permanently,” Buterin points out.

Ethereum’s Buterin continued: “It may be worth adding some pretty advanced L1 features to reduce the code burden of L2s and make them fairly simple.”

The conversation started when Bitcoin enthusiast Leo Fernevak stated in an X-post that there will be no scaling at the base layer. Fernevak claimed that complex functions can be built on top of L2s, adding that the base layer will always fill up regardless of scaling efforts.

Bitcoin Magazine’s technical editor, @brian_trollz, responded to Fernevak’s comment, pointing out that L2s are completely limited by what can be implemented on L1s. As previously reported, Buterin is also excited about the integration of Verkle trees into the Ethereum network, which could save significant disk space used by nodes and provide significant staking benefits.
