US authorities try to gain access to a captured Binance employee in Nigeria: report

According to local reports, US government authorities are trying to gain access to a detained Binance employee in Nigeria.

In February this year, Binance CEO Tigran Gambaryan was arrested along with a colleague, Nadeem Anjarwalla, who managed to flee the country.

The pair had traveled to Nigeria to hold regulatory talks.

Gambaryan has since been imprisoned in Nigeria. In August it was reported that his physical condition rapidly deteriorated in the African prison.

“Tigran’s physical and mental condition has rapidly deteriorated, and his situation is now more dire than ever. He is in severe pain and cannot walk due to a hernia. Despite his condition, the Nigerian government has denied him adequate medical care, including basic necessities such as access to a wheelchair.”

Reacting to the reports, Binance CEO Richard Teng called Gambaryan’s treatment by Nigerian authorities “inhumane.”

“This inhumane treatment of Tigran must end. He should be able to go home for medical treatment and be with his family.”

According to Nigerian news channel Punch, the US embassy is now pushing for access to the Binance executive as a US citizen.

According to Punch, the push for access is related to the health of the Binance employee.

This is what an anonymous source familiar with the matter says:

“All I know is that the US is concerned about the man’s health, especially now that his family in the US has made the matter public…

I wouldn’t say they are lobbying, they are just concerned about not getting access to the man (who is a US citizen). Don’t forget that Binance also had a problem in the US.”

Gambaryan has a hernia and is suffering from bouts of malaria and pneumonia. However, lawyers from Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission say Gambaryan is not in poor health and suffered from a hernia before prison.
