The University of Namibia has launched a masters program in blockchain technology to position Namibia as a hub for blockchain research and talent development in Africa.

Program background and national interest

The University of Namibia (UNAM), in partnership with the Africa Blockchain Institute (ABI), has announced the approval and rollout of a Master of Science in Blockchain Technology program. The new postgraduate degree is reportedly aimed at establishing Namibia as a leading hub for blockchain research and talent development in Africa.

The introduction of the master’s program is the culmination of UNAM’s long-standing efforts to integrate emerging technologies into its curriculum. As early as 2022, UNAM’s senior staff, including IT department head Samuel Nuugulu, noted that the university was “injecting” blockchain content into its programs to promote tech startups and develop skills crucial to the country’s development.

This push has been fueled by national interest, including proposals to use blockchain solutions in both the public and private sectors, and even reports of the central bank considering a digital currency.

The university’s formal partnership with the Africa Blockchain Institute is the latest step in that vision, providing the institutional expertise to launch a specialized master’s program.

Strategic investments in Africa’s digital future

According to a Techcabal report, the curriculum is structured to combine academic rigor with practical application, covering key areas such as blockchain architecture, smart contract development, cybersecurity, decentralized systems and governance.

Meanwhile, ABI said the main objective of the program is to bridge the knowledge gap that currently limits Africa’s participation in the global blockchain economy.

“This program represents more than a university degree. It reflects a strategic investment in Africa’s digital future,” said Kayode Babarinde, Executive Director of ABI. “Our partnership with the University of Namibia reflects our commitment to cultivating homegrown expertise that can lead Africa’s participation in the global blockchain revolution.”

UNAM reiterated this commitment, stating that the program is in line with its mission to drive research excellence and economic transformation through technological advancement.

Applications for the Master of Science in Blockchain Technology are now open through the University of Namibia’s online application portal. The first cohort is expected to set a new precedent for cutting-edge blockchain studies, shaping the continent’s next generation of technology leaders.
