The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) announces that it will carefully investigate crypto mining activities in the country.

In a recent press release, the EIA, a statistical and analytical agency within the US Department of Energy, says it wants to track how much electricity is used by US companies mining digital assets.

The EIA also says it will ask the public for its views on the energy data it collects from the companies.

“The U.S. Energy Information Administration is launching a preliminary investigation into electricity consumption information from identified cryptocurrency mining companies operating in the United States.

Get started [this] This week, EIA will investigate identified commercial cryptocurrency miners, who must respond with details of their energy consumption.. EIA will also seek public comment on the collection of energy consumption data from cryptocurrency miners.”

According to Joe DeCarolis, the EIA’s administrator, the agency wants to know more about the energy implications of virtual currency mining in the US.

As DeCarolis states in the press release:

“We plan to continue analyzing and writing about the energy implications of cryptocurrency mining activities in the United States.

We will specifically focus on how energy demand for cryptocurrency mining is evolving, identify high-growth geographies, and quantify the electricity sources used to meet cryptocurrency mining demand.”
