NFT Traders Respond to ‘Simpsons’ Roasting by Spending Millions on Knockoff Collectibles

An NFT collection that combines the aesthetic of CryptoPunks with elements of “The Simpsons” has racked up nearly $2.5 million in sales in less than 24 hours and rocketed to the top trending position on OpenSea after the long-running animated television show featured NFTs in a special episode had roasted.

The unofficial Springfield Punks collection launched as a free coin on Sunday, with traders rushing to snap up the 3,405 Ethereum NFTs. Since then, the project has seen a trading volume worth 1,311 ETH (over $2.4 million), according to the OpenSea marketplace. At the time of writing, Springfield Punks NFTs start at just under 0.11 ETH (about $200) on the secondary market.

Launched by Rino Russo, a self-proclaimed parody artist, Springfield Punks went live on Sunday night. In terms of daily volume, the collection was behind only Bored Ape Yacht Club (2,412 ETH) and CryptoPunks (1,893 ETH) at the time of writing.

Several NFT collections that appear to take inspiration from ‘The Simpsons’ vied for fame on OpenSea Monday, such as ‘SimpsPunks.” “The Chimpsons Official” and “Springfield Apes by Rino Russo” are examples of other Simpsons-themed projects that made a splash on the front page of OpenSea.

Donuts, beer, and blue beehive hairstyles are hallmarks of this groundbreaking comedy, but the results resemble many NFT profile photo (PFP) projects. In both cases, a kaleidoscope of ‘Simpsons’-themed images is randomly spread across thousands of monkey-like creatures.

While “The Chimpsons Official” took pride of place in the aftermath of Sunday’s episode, the collection was created last September. Since then, approximately 600 units have been sold in 6,996 so-called Chimpsons, according to Open sea.

The collection’s floor price (or the cheapest NFT from a collection available for purchase) rose from 0.03 ETH ($6) to 0.44 ETH ($840) overnight. At the time of writing, Chimpsons was trading for around 0.01 ETH ($19), according to OpenSea.

Sunday’s episode of “The Simpsons” paid tribute to a number of established NFT collections, including Beeple’s Every day: the first 5000 days– but the Bored Ape Yacht Club and CryptoPunks collected recognizable cameos as iconic projects.

Officially licensed NFTs from ‘The Simpsons’ haven’t dropped alongside the new ‘Treehouse of Horror’ episode, but the show has dipped its toes into NFTs before. To promote the launch of Disney+, Disney rolled out NFTs in 2021 Homer, Bart and his skateboard on the VeVe marketplace.
