How Arbtirum, Optimism, and Base Changed the Nature of L2 Adoption

  • Transactions on the L2 network are up 46% compared to a year ago.
  • Base and Optimism networking activity has been impressive, but Arbitrum has lost momentum.

Most of the ether [ETH] L2s have endured since launch as a number of them have excelled at attracting and to cling users while maintaining a healthy transaction level.

Realistic or not, here it is OP’s market capitalization in terms of ARB

But when it comes to the Zero Knowledge (ZK) and the optimistic merge groups, the latter has remained dominant.

To do the numbers

This claim was made clear in a recent post by Lucas Outumuro on X (formerly Twitter). Outumuro, head of research at IntoTheBlock, noted that the adoption of Arbitrum, for example [ARB]Optimism [OP]and Base were impressive.

Typically, adoption for most blockchain projects is measured by the rate of network growth. This is the number of new addresses that not only join the network, but also interact with it.

A year ago, optimistic rollups had only 16% of daily L2 transactions. But by September, the trio had a combined share of 67%, Outumuro noted.

However, it is important to note that a year ago most projects were still in the Testnet phase. Only Optimism, whose Mainnet was launched on May 31, 2022, was in full development. So this could be one of the reasons for the enormous growth.

Meanwhile, the Ethereum Mainnet still ranks first with the highest Transactions Per Second (TPS) of 11.93. However, Base, Arbitrum and Optimism have had more grow than Ethereum in this regard in the past seven days, L2BEAT revealed.

The growth of these optimistic rollups is a testament to the speed and efficiency that smart contracts and dApps gain by leveraging the L2s. But has this also had a positive effect on everyday users?

OP, base on top position; ARB lags behind

Well, data from Blockscan showed that the number of new unique addresses on Arbitrum has decreased to 1.43 million. This decline has in turn resulted in a reduction of transactions on the Arbitrum network.

For Base and Optimism it was the other way around. On September 22, Optimism’s number of daily new unique addresses rose to 1.2 million. But that number has decreased at the time of writing.

Basic, which is relatively new compared the other two also showed a similar trend to optimism. On September 22, the number of new addresses on Base rose to 782,860, the highest number recorded by Base since the beginning of the month.

At the time of writing, the unique addresses on the network were 665,890.
