Press release
CSC, Surf and Nokia reach 1.2 Tbit/S-data transfer to prepare a long distance network for new Lumi-AI

  • Trial helps researchers to prepare the network for clusters of High Performance Computing (HPC) and AI factories that handle huge data sets and workload with high intensity.
  • Results confirm that multi-domain, high-capacity data transfers in European research networks are both feasible and ready for the future.

June 4, 2025
Espoo, Finland-Nokia, CSC-IT Center for Science and Surf have successfully tested a quantum-optic optical compound connections with high capacity, more than 1.2 terabit per second (TBIT/s) between Amsterdam, the Netherlands and Kajaani, Finland with 3500 kilometers data. The test, which was carried out in May 2025, demonstrated the potential of Ultrasnelle, cross -border connectivity for research.

Tests were carried out along various routes, including the longest that include 4,700 km through Norway with a capacity of 1Tbit/s. To put this in perspective, 1 Tbit/s is sufficient to stream 200,000 Full HD films (at 5 Mbit/s) at the same time.

These results are particularly promising, because the research community is preparing for supercomputers and AI factories to come online – where reliable, scalable and secure connections are crucial for supporting some of the world’s largest data sets and most demanding workloads.

The test used a combination of real research data and synthetic data, directly transferred from disk to disk – from the facility of Surf in Amsterdam to the data center of CSC in Kajaani, in five production research and educational networks: Surf (the Netherlands), Nordunet (Nordic Backbone), Sikt (Sunet), Siktet Siktet (NorWay), Siktet Siket, Sunet, Sicket Sunet, Sunet, Sicket Sunet, Sunet (NorWay), Siktet (NorWay), Sicket (NorWay) and Sicket (NorWay) and Sicket (NorWay), and Sunet (NorWay), and Sunet (NorWay) and Siktet (NorWay) and Siktet (NorWay) and Sicket (NorWay) and Sicket (NorWay) and Sicket (NorWay) and Sicket (NorWay) and Sicket (NorWay) and sunet (NorWay) and Sunet. (CSC).

The network solution was based on Nokia’s IP/MPLS routing and quantum-safe optical network equipment. Nokia’s IP technology successfully demonstrated flexible Ethernet (Flexe) to accommodate “elephant flows”, or very large continuous data flows, and the optical transport technology with high capacity showed the ability to process mass data sets that are generated by HPCs over long distances.

With the exponential growth of research data, especially for training large-scale AI models, the need for resilient, high-throughput and safe connectivity is more critical than ever. This test confirms that multi-domain data transfers with high capacity in European research networks are both feasible and ready for the future. Testing an operational network connection over long distances offers unique insights into data transport and storage of large data volumes. The tests are crucial for improving the infrastructure for data-intensive research.

“We design research networks with future needs in mind. “As SURF, we are ready to take the next step in coordinating European supercomputers. These efforts offer future perspectives to train GPT-NL on Lumi or for a researcher to calculate Lumi on Lumi with very large datasets organized at Surf, such as the KNMI (the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Collaboration) that is again good for the through-outdoor interim of the goods for the Tussenoorological Collaborations for the Tussenoorological Tussenoorological Tussen Best for the Tussengeorological Collaborations for the Tussenoorological Tussenoorological Cut-of the Properations. create infrastructure for research and education, “said Arno Bakker, senior network specialist, surf.

“Due to groundbreaking tests such as these emphasize how advanced networks are fundamental to unlocking the full potential of AI and high-performance computing. This successful collaboration with CSC and Surf is proof of the innovation and leadership of the scientific community, and what is possible when we collaborate. As the network. IP/mpls.
