‘Conviction in Bitcoin is steadfast’: Saylor refutes MSCI takedown risk amid Strategy stock sell-off

As his company’s share price continues to fall, Strategy Chairman Michal Saylor has struck a challenging tone for the second time in as many weeks.

In one message on X On Friday morning, Saylor discussed the possibility of Strategy (ticker MSTR) being removed from the major stock indices by MSCI. The Bitcoin Treasury pioneer is included in major indices such as the Nasdaq-100, MSCI USA and MSCI World.

“Strategy is not a fund, not a trust, and not a holding company,” Saylor said. “We are a publicly traded company with a $500 million software business and a unique treasury strategy that uses Bitcoin as productive capital.”

Last month, MSCI said it is reviewing whether to exclude digital asset treasury companies from its indexes, with a decision expected on January 15, 2026. In a note this week, JPMorgan analysts said Strategy could see about $2.8 billion in outflows if MSTR is removed from those stock indexes, and another $8.8 billion if other index providers follow suit.

As of the last purchase, Strategy has purchased a total of 649,870 BTC for a total of approximately $48.4 billion. The company now owns more than 3% of the total supply of 21 million Bitcoin. The price of bitcoin is now down about 24% in the past month, which JPMorgan analysts attribute largely to retail sales of spot bitcoin and ether ETFs.

“If MicroStrategy is excluded from these indices, it could face significant valuation pressure as passive index funds represent a substantial portion of its ownership,” the analysts wrote.

While Saylor continues to buy, Strategy Investors continue to sell. MSTR shares are down about 13.5% over the past week and down almost 44% over the past month. At the time of publication, the stock was trading around $173.50 per share, down from an all-time high of over $450 in July.

“No passive vehicle or holding company could do what we do. Index rating does not define us,” Saylor said. “Our strategy is long-term, our belief in Bitcoin is steadfast and our mission remains unchanged: to build the world’s first digital monetary institution on a foundation of sound money and financial innovation.”
