Concordium debuts App for anonymous online age controls in the midst of British rules for return

Layer-1 Proof-of-Stake Blockchain Concordium has launched a mobile app with which users can verify their age without making their identity known.

According to a Tuesday announcement shared with Cointelegraph, the new solution can be used as a mobile application for iOS and Android-zero knowledge destinations (ZK-proofs) to enable users to prove their age without revealing their identity.

The app makes a coded ID that can be used for age controls on third -party services. Concordium has drawn up the launch as a privacy -friendly alternative to traditional ID -based systems at a time when the concern about verification mandated by the government is growing.

“The truth is that the web has never had a viable age verification system, resulting in pieces of solutions that are at best not effective and in the worst case a privacy risk,” said Boris Bohrer-Bilowitzki, CEO of Concordium.

A private -verification -solution

ZK-proofs have a party prove that they know certain information without revealing it. This type of cryptography is especially popular with privacy-oriented cryptocurrency developers, in which Zcash (ZEC) uses it for anonymous transfers and decentralized Mixer Tornado-Contant Money for anonymous ether transactions (ETH).

A Concordium representative told Cointelegraph that the service is a mobile application for consumers that is available for downloading on iPhone and Android devices. Consumers can make a Concordium ID using the app for around $ 0.01, which can be used for verification on integrated services.

Concordium said that the app makes verification of attributes possible, such as name, date of birth, nationality and document type. In practice, the company said, none of this information is exposed to service providers. Instead, ZK-proofs confirm that a user meets the requirements such as older than 18.

Can the online age verification rules of the UK protect the privacy?

The launch follows controversy around the recently introduced mandatory online ID checks of the United Kingdom for age verification to view content for adults, a definition that is wide enough to record Wikipedia.

Proponents of Privacy strongly criticized the British measure, in which VPN apps see the growing popularity in the country, because government officials suggest that they are also fighting. The implementation of the new measures was mandatory on Tuesday.

The British laws that require ID verification for access to content for adults are technically neutral. The local communication regulator, ofcom, stated in his guidance document that reusable digital ID portfolios that share a characteristic “adult/more than 18” are a valid implementation.

This may allow the use of a service-proof-based service, as long as it meets the “highly effective” standard and British data protection rights of the British. A Concordium spokesperson told Cointelegraph that the company and his partners are “active with ofcom” on their age verification solutions.

The interest in ZK-proofs goes beyond crypto projects. Google Wallet, the payment of the search giant and the application of digital card management, announced at the end of April that the ZK-proofs had integrated for age verification.

“With this implementation we can offer fast age verification on a wide range of mobile devices, apps and websites,” said Google.
