OpenSea dropped the NFTs from this game and then the creators got revenge

A reference to one NFT marketplace might not be noticeable in a game like Open season. After all, the Fortnite-like battle royale shooter is steeped in colorful crypto memes, including a Pepe-themed amusement park plus Bored monkeys And Milady avatars running around.

But if the ‘tribute’ in question is the flaming wreck of a ship next to a wharf labeled ‘OpenSea’ (and you look at the title of the game), then it’s sure to turn heads. And it is also personal.

OpenSea’s burning effigy, shared for the first time viaTwitter This month is game developer Fractional Uprising Studios’ winking response to an enforcement action from the NFT marketplace. OpenSea removed the studios Ethereum NFT passes, which provide access to the game and other benefits, including in-game items and potential tokens air drop rewards.

“We already had a plan to add some OpenSea knowledge to the game,” co-founder Krypticrooks said under a pseudonym Decode GG. But plans changed after OpenSea took action. It would still be a boat at a dock, but no longer floating in calm waters.

Our friends like @opensea have wrongly disabled our collection and denied us an appeal.

That’s why we decided to add some more NFT knowledge to ‘OpenSeason’. What do you think?@opunshizun @EpicGames pic.twitter.com/frgMtrzT5X

“After the delist, [co-founder] Spoobs decided it must be on fire, with evidence at the dock indicating this had been done by the FU Studios team,” he said. “Very bold, and a slight jab at them.”

Factional uprising tweeted a short video clip earlier this month, claiming that OpenSea had “wrongfully disabled our collection.” Declutter reviewed the team’s email interactions with OpenSea customer service representatives, who informed the studio that the collection had been removed. While it is still possible view the project via OpenSeathe NFTs cannot be listed or traded.

An OpenSea representative confirmed this Declutter that the project has been removed from the list because it violates the guidelines terms of service. The representative pointed to the section of the terms that contains statements prohibiting “using the service to conduct financial activities” related to “creating, offering, selling or purchasing securities, commodities, options or debt instruments.”

“As stated in our terms of service, any party seeking to conduct the offering of financial instruments on OpenSea is in direct violation of the company’s policies and is subject to enforcement action, including delisting and, in some cases, banning accounts .” the OpenSea representative said Declutter.

Similar language was shared with the Fractional Uprising team when they inquired about the delisting. They responded with the message: “We have not made and do not intend to make any securities offering of any kind.”

OpenSea’s customer service representative responded that they “could not change this decision.”

The studio’s founders are angry about the lack of transparency. While OpenSea’s form letter to the team didn’t go into specifics, the developers don’t believe their project description offered incentives or promises of financial gain that are out of line with what other NFT projects have done. The inability to appeal was especially frustrating for them.

“It’s basically just closing the door, and you have no say,” Krypticrooks says. “It is a private company. I guess they can do whatever they want, but they deserve to have the reputation that precedes them. They don’t behave very ‘Web3,’ In my opinion.”

OpenSea declined to comment further Declutter apart from confirming the removal from the list and the reason given. But the complaint that OpenSea is “more corporate” or “less Web3” than competing platforms is not new among merchants, especially since it relies on venture capital funding and consistently calls ignored to launch its own crypto token for the benefit of users and to share governance.

About a year ago, however, rival Blur quickly overtook OpenSea when it offered BLUR token rewards. OpenSea is still a big name, but there are now more popular projects in terms of trading volume – meaning that OpenSea’s delisting alone is no longer the death knell it might have been for projects in 2021 or 2022.

And while this doesn’t explain (or shouldn’t explain) the delisting, OpenSeason’s creators have ridiculed the market in the past. The game’s name was intended as a cross between the former NFT giant and the concept of “open season” in hunting, they said.

Furthermore, the team is earlier shared a false smear letter from OpenSea’s alleged lawyers in July 2023 as a marketing gimmick, pretending the market was taking action because of the similar brand name. The founders claim that some OpenSea employees contacted them at the time saying it was a funny joke.

— Fractional Uprising Studios (@FU_STUDIOS) July 28, 2023

Be that as it may, Fractional Uprising will continue without OpenSea. The NFT Passes are still listed via Blur, among other marketplaces, and OpenSeason is just days away from its debut: the PC game will be released in early access via the Epic Games Store on February 29, with the NFT serving as a ticket to the Battle Royale showdowns.

Based on trailers and early gameplay footage streamed to Twitter, OpenSeason appears to be an even more cartoonish riff on Fortnite’s survival-based shooter gameplay, with the “Island of Jpeg” packed with crypto memes and avatars based on CryptoPunks, Bored Monkeys, and more. The team said they have hundreds of crypto references that they plan to package over time.

Hey, @VitalikButerin. Is that you?

It is. Welcome to the island of Jpeg in ‘OpenSeason’.

OpenSeason will also launch a competitive mode where players can find and use in-game “beans,” similar to the points systems of other crypto apps and protocols. They can be used to make your character stronger or play in matches, as well as exchanged for the studio’s planned token called FUmoney.

While Krypticrooks views OpenSea as “bullies,” he admitted that the showdown has given the game some additional “lore” to tap into as Fractional Uprising expands on OpenSeason’s curious crypto skirmishes. And Spoobs said there is still one possible way OpenSea can repair fences.

“If they airdrop, we will forgive them,” he said.
