This $1200 Baseball Cap Helps Protect Your Data?

TL;DR

  • Disco is selling a $1,200 baseball cap to help drive adoption of its Web3 data storage technology. Which sounds stupid at first glance, but might actually be genius in practice?

  • Here’s the problem: onboarding into the Disco ecosystem is confusing as hell.

  • But Disco recognizes that people are more likely to figure something out when there’s money or status at the end of it.

  • So the company has started selling branded baseball caps ($1200) and t-shirts ($2400) on its website, but will be giving them away for free to users of its technology.

  • Is an overpriced baseball cap or tee enough incentive for people to take the initiative? No idea! But we like the creative thinking on display here.

Full story

This is the story of how Disco sells a $1200 baseball cap to drive adoption of its Web3 data storage technology.

Which sounds stupid at first glance, but might actually be genius in practice?

This is Disco’s problem:

The company wants users to own their personal data, not technology companies.

In order for people to take custody of their personal data through Disco, they need to create their own “data backpack” through Discord, add “credentials” to that backpack, and share those credentials with friends.

If you’re like us, you just yelled “WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT MEAN!?” behind your computer screen (which will scare everyone around you in the office).

And even though we are shocked by the amount of data that Facebook, TikTok and Google have about us…

We still can’t be bothered to take the time to answer our own question.

…and this apathy has not gone unnoticed by the people at Disco.

So here’s their solution:

Disco recognizes that people are more likely to figure something out when there’s money or status at the end of it.

So the company started selling branded baseball caps ($1200) and t-shirts ($2400) on its website.

But here’s the twist…

They’re giving them away for free to anyone who takes it upon themselves to grind it out and embark on the Disco ecosystem.

Is an overpriced baseball cap or tee enough incentive for people to take initiative? No idea!

But we like the creative thinking on display here.
