Matter Labs, the company behind Layer-2 Blockchain ZKSYNC, has been sued by Bankex, a destroyed digital asset bench platform, for theft of intellectual property.

At the New York State Supreme Court.

The complaint claimed that Bankex was approached by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin in 2017 to build operational software for ‘Plasma’, a technology that was currently seen as a way to use Ethereum cheaper.

According to the complaint, Alexandr Vlasov and Petr Korolev were at the time Bankex employees and Bankex CEO Igor Khemel were instructed to complete the plasma project.

The complaint claimed that Vlasov and Korolev secretly developed a competitive company, Matter Labs, so they intended to apply the blockchain technology from Bankex for their own use and benefit and to compete with Bankex ‘. Moreover, the complaint claimed that the two developers secretly exaggerated the technology of “Bankex exaggerating laboratories and secretly developed and stored operational code bases” using the resources and financing of the company.

Vlasov is currently head of R&D at Matter Labs, and Korolev is the founder of Blockchain Security Firm Oxorio, according to their LinkedIn profiles. Matter Labs Co-founder Alex Gluchowski, Crypto-Native Investment Fund, and Chris Burniske, a partner at Placeholder Capital and a former CO director at Matter Labs, are also charged for their alleged involvement and knowledge of the theft.

“We believe that these claims are completely without merit,” a Matter Labs spokesperson told Coindesk in an E -mail statement. “The thrust of the complaint is that Matter Labs has built ZKSync on top of the code originally developed in Bankex. This is categorically untrue. ZKSync is original technology that is not based on or derived from a code developed by Bankex.

Dragonfly, Burniske and Korolev have not responded to several requests for comments.

Bankex lawyer Clayton Mahaffey told Coindesk in a statement that the company “would rather not comment on the case at the moment, other than his conviction to repeat that the allegations in the complaint are well based and that it is looking forward to his time in court.”
