A new project is intended to bring a new approach to NFT utility by combining digital ownership with Real-World Land Rights in the Glen Nant National Nature Reserve in Scotland.
In contrast to many NFT projects that promise future value, Squarecrows offers immediately, tangible ownership of souvenir plots in a legally recognized system dating from 1979. Each NFT corresponds to a 3m x 3M plot, uniquely identified via the Wat3Words location system.

NFT Now: What inspired squarecrows, and how does it differ from other NFT projects?
Doug Wilson: I have sold souvenirplot gift packages for 14 years, and during the Covid Lockdown we had to introduce a ‘digital download’ product due to the implementation problems. To my surprise, it became a really popular option! That made me think, and a few years later I couldn’t help it, but admire the incredible success of Pudgy Penguins. Then I really started to look at NFTs and I love their vision of consumer crypto. I decided to launch squarecrows to combine NFTs with the already popular Souvenirplot gift and I really hope we can help some people to web3.
How does blockchain solve the issue of souvenirplot transfer?
Traditionally, the buyer of a souvenirplot obtains a personal property right through a paper sales contract between the buyer and the seller. Unfortunately for the buyer in this case they cannot transfer their property rights to a third party at a later date. The sale of the souvenir plots like NFTS bypass this problem, because the property rights are essentially token. The person who owns the NFT has the personal property right to the souvenirplot, regardless of how often it is transferred. This is infinitely faster, cheaper and better than the outdated system used by the official land register and it is absolutely clear to me that the national register of Scotland must be on the blockchain.
Why choose Glen Nant, and how do you balance the conservation with NFT.
I bought the country about 5 years ago in Glen Nant. It is incredibly rare that National Nature Reserve would become available on the private market and I just didn’t want the chance to pass. The country itself is beautiful and there are a number of really beautiful tree specimens in it. It also has good access for visitors, so the squarecrows project suited the country from the start. Who doesn’t want to be part of such a stunning place? Polygon felt like a good fit for the NFTs because the carbon is negative and has low gas costs. However, I could release future NFTs on a different platform.
What does Squarecrows Real-World give value further than typical NFTs?
The personal property right to a real 3m x 3M piece land is a real world-first. We know that tens of thousands of people have visited their little suddenly from Scotland and I think Squarecrows NFTS bridges the gap between the physical and digital worlds in a fun way.

How do the Web3 TLD, Games, Merch and Strips improve the community?
The merch is really cool! When you buy an NFT, you can download the NFT image of your account. We work together with Printful, so that you can have your NFT image on mugs, T-shirts, wall prints and other cool things printed. The comics are there to explain the squarecrows story (spoiler: The Squarecrows are flatter because of an old floek, and they are on a journey to break the fly and regain the power of the flight). Each chapter of the story will be celebrated with a release of NFTs. The Web3 TLDs are for our top enthusiasts and the games are only there to have people with the brand communicate.
What legal rights do buyers receive and how does this differ from land ownership?
From a legal point of view, our company continues to receive a personal property right to their Souvenirplot of Land. Usually the registered landowner would enable us to do things such as applying for a building permit, plant trees or access paths. NFT owners cannot do any of those things, but we cannot because the country is rightly covered by really strict rules about management and conservation. The future of the country is guaranteed by law.

What is the next step for squarecrows – Expansion, new functions or other innovations?
We are going to create an online community with NFT supply access. I want NFT ownership to unlock all kinds of benefits, but we need the community to grow first. A lot is currently happening on Solana, but our project is really coming to the vision of Abstract. Oh, and there will be hugs or my children will never forgive me!
