Here’s what Brave’s new Web3 Call feature can do

NFT

  • Brave has unveiled a new feature of its video calling product Brave Talk.
  • The new feature uses NFTs to control call access.
  • Brave Talk plans to change live events and video calls.

Projects continue to find new and exciting use cases for NFTs, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the digital world with these assets. This time around, Brave, a privacy-focused web3 browser, is at the forefront of a revolution and introduces a new application for NFTs: Token-gated Video calls.

Brave appears to be shaking up the video call and live event industry by integrating NFTs into the structure of video calls and redefining how users interact online.

Unveiling of Brave Talk

Popular Web3 browser Brave has unveiled a new token gating feature for its video calling product, Brave Talk. The new web3 feature allows conversation hosts to use NFTs and Proof of Attendance Protocol NFTs (POAPs) to restrict access, configure avatars, assign moderator permissions, and more.

With this feature, Brave ushers in a new era of video calling and live events by creating the world’s first fully integrated Web3 live event platform that seamlessly integrates browser, wallet and video capabilities.

Brave’s Web3 invocation feature introduces a new level of functionality and security related to user authentication and authorization by using token-gated access. Video calling solutions like Zoom and Google Meet, on the other hand, still rely on passwords to control access. Brave Talk mimics real-life ticket-gated entry through the new feature using NFTs as tickets.

Token gating is a major achievement for Brave Talk. Communities and projects can now hold member events for token holders, reward loyal fans, set up NFT auctions, and more.

While the feature is only compatible with Ethereum-based NFTs, especially ERC-721 NFTs, the possibilities are endless, all thanks to the Token-gating mechanism.

What is token gating?

Token gating is one of the main ways users can manage access in Web3 and it consists of two parts: authentication and authorization.

In the authentication phase, users’ wallet addresses are verified using the SIWE (Sign-In with Ethereum) protocol for Web3 authentication. The system sends a message to the wallet address. Users sign the message with their email address and return it to the sender for verification.

In the authorization phase, the token-gating system checks whether the user’s wallet meets the requirements. The requirement can be a certain NFT, token or membership to join the conversation.

Brave’s new Web3 calling feature will shake up video calls and live events as it is very easy to use as most of the Web3 protocols are relatively tricky to use due to their user interface.

How to use Brave’s new Web3 calling feature

Please note that only users with a Premium Talk subscription can access the new feature. Once you’ve subscribed to Premium Talk, here’s how to access Brave’s new web3 calling feature.

  • Open the Brave browser.
  • Click Host a Web3 call.
  • Verify your identity using your Web3 wallet.
  • After verification, you can choose an NFT as your avatar and choose who can join the conversation.

Brave Talk’s new feature is still very experimental. The Privacy Browser has shared that it plans to use feedback from current users’ experiences to optimize future versions. Brave has many features ready for the future, which could be rolled out later this year.

What’s next for Web3 Brave Talk?

Although NFT-gated Brave Talk is only available to premium users, the browser company has announced that it plans to open the feature to all users. Brave added that it is currently testing features such as support for non-Ethereum NFTs, token gating for owners of a particular token, token gating based on past ownership, and sending cryptocurrencies to participants.

On the other hand

  • Brave shared that it surpassed 50 million monthly active users by 2023.
  • The privacy-focused browser introduced support for Solana dApps on iOS and Android versions of Brave.

Why this matters

Brave’s new web3 calling feature is groundbreaking and opens doors to many new possibilities. With its token-gated system, it could revolutionize web3 live events, concerts and more and drive the adoption of NFT and Web3 in the right direction.
