UK National Crime Agency Officer Stole 50 Bitcoin (BTC) in 2017, claims public prosecutor

Officers of the United Kingdom claim that an officer who works for the National Crime Agency (NCA) of the country in 2017 stolen 50 Bitcoin (BTC).

The Crown Prosecution Services authorized the MerseSide police to accuse NCA officer Paul Chowles of 11 counts of hiding, disguised or converting criminal property, three counts of acquiring, using or possessing criminal property and a single count of theft.

The 50 BTC cost £ 60,000 in 2017 ($ 77,658) and is worth £ 3.26 million ($ 4.2 million) at the time of writing.

Chowles, 42, will appear on the Liverpool -Magistration Court on 25 April.

The charges of the officer came less than a year after the new British legislation granted extra crypto-related powers to the NCA and the police.

The extensive powers enable British authorities to grab crypto from ‘advanced criminals’ who remain anonymous or are located abroad. The police are also authorized to seize physical items with regard to crypto investigations, such as Flash Drives and written passwords.

Moreover, the British police may now destroy a crypto activum “if the return to circulation is not conducive to the public interest,” and victims of crypto crime will be authorized to apply for the return of digital assets of them.

Chief Crown Officer Adrian Foster argued last year that the extensive powers were needed in an era in which criminals use crypto technology.

“Crypto assets are often used by criminal gangs to wash their criminal profit international white with the push of a button.

It is vital that researchers and public prosecutors have the ability and agility to keep pace with this changing nature of crime, [and] These new measures will greatly help our ability to limit, freeze or eliminate Crypto assets from illegal enterprises. “
