Keisha Lance Bottoms, soon to be Joe Biden’s senior campaign adviser, told the media that crypto is a nonpartisan issue.
On June 27, Bottoms told The Hill that crypto is “a nonpolitical and unifying issue that has gained bipartisan support,” adding that crypto has captured the attention of voters across the US.
She added that crypto and blockchain are “evolving the financial system,” including by empowering Atlanta’s black-owned businesses.
She commented on financial inclusion, stating that she wants to address issues that “impact communities of color who are disproportionately underbanked or unbanked in America.”
Bottoms called for fair regulation
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) separately reported that Bottoms appeared at Crypto Votes Atlanta on June 26, an event hosted by Stand With Crypto.
During the event, she emphasized that the crypto industry calls for regulations that deal fairly with financial products and are “fair and accessible to communities.”
She continued:
“We want to make sure that the bad actors don’t have a seat at the table because this gives the industry as a whole a bad name.”
Bottoms said she has been working to understand the crypto industry since the cybercrime group Lockbit launched a ransomware attack on Fulton County in early 2024. She called the incident her first interaction with crypto.
Biden campaign advisor
Bottoms’ statements coincide with reports that she will join Joe Biden’s presidential campaign as a senior adviser, as Ebony reported on June 26.
Bottoms has been a member of Coinbase’s Global Advisory Council since April. The Hill reported that she would remain in the role after joining the Biden campaign.
Bottoms also served as director of the Biden administration’s Office of Public Engagement from July 2022 to 2023, acting as a senior advisor to the president during the same period. She served as mayor of Atlanta from January 2018 to January 2022.
