Ethereum Name Service (ENS), a domain name protocol that runs on top of Ethereum, has reached an agreement with GoDaddy to allow users to associate free internet domains with their ENS addresses.
Adoption of Web3 by mainstream companies slowed during the bear market, but the deal between ENS and GoDaddy, the Internet’s largest domain registry, could signal a renewed interest in connecting blockchain with traditional technologies.
“Beyonce owns Beyonce.xyz, and now she can set up a wallet just by going to the GoDaddy page and entering your address,” Nick Johnson, the founder of ENS, told CoinDesk as an example. “Now Beyonce.xyz is her wallet ID for all purposes.”
Ultimately, the goal will be to integrate more chains outside of Ethereum.
“Right now you can use this integration to set up your Ethereum address, but in the future it should be possible to do this for addresses for all chains to set up text records so you know from your .xyz or your .com you can create Web3 profile.”
The announcement comes as ENS remains in court with GoDaddy afterward they sued them for selling an ENS domain”eth.link.”
“I think you can disagree with someone on one thing and still be good friends and still be happy to work together on other things. And we are face to face on a lot of things,” Johnson told CoinDesk. According to Johnson, the eth.link case is still pending in court.
“I think naming and Web3 will work better if we don’t try to pretend that existing systems don’t exist and reinvent everything from scratch, but instead build systems that work on and on top of existing systems,” Johnson added. .
