Vitalik Buterin calls charges against Bitcoin Og Roger far ‘absurd’ and something to be against

Ethereum (ETH) Maker Vitalik Buterin says that the targeting of the US government of the Early Bitcoin (BTC) pioneer Roger is far an “absurd” and unreasonable persecution.

Ver, an early Bitcoin investor who later decided to support the Bitcoin Cash (BCH) fork, was arrested in Spain at the end of April 2024 in the direction of the US Department of Justice (DOJ).

He is confronted with multiple costs, including postal fraud, tax evasion and submitting false tax returns for a maximum of 109 years in prison.

Buterin, however, says that the charges seem to be a politically motivated and compares the matter with that of Ross Ulbricht, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in prison for creating the online marketplace, De Zijdeweg before he received a grace from President Trump.

“The rest of your life go to prison about non-violent tax violations is absurd. The case against Roger seems very politically motivated; Just like with Ross Ulbricht, there have been many people and companies that have been accused of much worse and are still confronted with punishments that are much milder than what Roger stands for.

The argument that the flashlight on him is motivated by things he said (namely his advocacy of freedom and refusal to accept the legitimacy of mandatory state power) seems immersing. This is worthwhile to be against, because selective prosecution for non -related violations is a usual way to circumvent protection, such as the first amendment (or in more authoritarian countries, even more fundamental things such as the moral prohibition on punishing people for the crimes of their family members). “

Despite the fact that he reported his citizenship of his United States in 2014 after obtaining citizenship in Saint Kitts and Nevis, the authorities said that far -reaching tax returns had reported a power gain by the sale of his worldwide assets, including his bitcoin, and the real market value of his assets.

Says Buterin,

“The American tax for citizenship and the corresponding exit tax regime is extreme; The first is shared by almost no other countries in the world, and the latter is on the highest of what countries do (eg UK only counts capital profits when you return within 5 years) …

Real errors of good faith must be treated by giving the actor the opportunity to repay tax if necessary with interest and fines, not with prosecution. “
