  • VechainThor integrates biotech, graphene for self-growing biological fuel cells.
  • Bacteria-powered electric cells, operated by VechainThor, provide sustainable energy.
  • Professor Qi Ge investigates the potential of bioenergy with VechainThor’s blockchain.

An editorial by Professor Qi Ge, Vechain Steering Committee member and physicist specializing in 2D materials, sheds light on groundbreaking biotech innovations that are revolutionizing sustainability through VechainThor’s blockchain integration.

β€” Collin Brown (@CollinBrownXRP) November 10, 2023

In an era where sustainable solutions drive technological progress, questions arise about the actual environmental impact of these ‘green’ technologies. Although renewable energy sources and eco-friendly vehicles reduce the overall impact on the environment, their production often requires resource-intensive elements, raising concerns about their sustainability.

Amid this challenge, an unconventional but promising solution is emerging: biological fuel cells powered by bacteria. Certain bacteria, as part of their natural metabolic process, generate electricity when fed substances such as lactose, which provides a renewable energy source. The complexity lies in harvesting this electrical current from individual bacteria, a task that requires an interdisciplinary approach at the intersection of biology, chemistry, physics and materials science.

The proposed solution involves using graphene, an ultra-thin and highly conductive material, to create a base for the bacteria. By treating the graphene surface with specific chemical groups that attract and support the bacteria’s electron donation process, a self-growing, electrically charged system can be created that resembles a fuel cell.

However, the temperamental nature of bacteria requires precise environmental conditions for stability. Monitoring and regulating these biological fuel cells requires an advanced system, possibly integrated into VechainThor’s blockchain, to ensure stability, efficiency and seamless integration into the global sustainability network.

Vechain, the curator of VechainThor, is leading this innovation, using blockchain, trusted data, smart contracts and IoT technologies for real-world applications. The focus now extends to driving digital ecosystems to revolutionize global sustainability efforts. The integration of biotech and blockchain marks a transformative step toward a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
