Understanding ZKsync: An Ethereum Layer-2 Solution

ZKsync is an Ethereum Layer-2 scaling solution that aims to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of Ethereum transactions by executing them outside the main Ethereum chain. This is done through the use of zk-rollups, which group transactions and process them outside the main blockchain. Layer 2 solutions can be thought of as an additional highway built along the busy highway, allowing more transactions to take place on the main highway (Ethereum). This additional row shows the off-chain transaction handling that ZKsync performs using zk-rollups.

How does ZKsync work?

The operation of ZKsync starts with accumulating transactions using zk-rollups. Instead of confirming individual transactions, ZKsync collects them and confirms the batch to reduce pressure on the Ethereum main chain.

After this, ZKsync produces ZKPs to prove these batches. ZKPs allow the batches to have valid transactions in their batches. At the same time, it ensures that the details of the transactions remain hidden. This can be as simple as asking about certain things that only someone with the password can answer without having to provide the password.

ZK token

ZKsync is a decentralized governance system and the ZK token is crucial to it as it grants voting rights to its holders. To exercise this power, users must stake the ZK tokens to a ZKsync address, which can be their own or someone else’s. The person who manages that address, called a delegate, is given the right to vote on proposals for governance.

Most importantly, delegation does not transfer tokens. However, it only activates voting capabilities for the designated address. Delegation can be changed by the token holder at any time and will remain in effect until changed or the tokens are sold. The ZK token was launched on Binance on June 17, 2024 with a Seed tag.

ZKsync Airdrop

ZKsync sold 17.5% of the total ZK tokens to wallets and the contributors who participated in the airdrop. Users had to transfer their assets to ZKsync Era and meet conditions. These key terms include invoking smart contracts, transacting through payment masters, trading ERC-20 tokens, providing liquidity, holding certain NFTs, or participating in the ZKsync Lite platform.

The contribution-based airdrop also distributed tokens to various contributors within the ZKsync system. This included direct grants for native projects developed on ZKsync Era, developers, GitHub contributors and on-chain organizations.

How to Claim the ZKsync Airdrop

ZKsync is a decentralized governance system. while the ZK token is crucial for this because it grants voting rights to its holders. To exercise this power, users must stake the ZK tokens to a ZKsync address, which can be their own or someone else’s. The person who manages that address, called a delegate, is given the right to vote on proposals for governance. Most importantly, delegation does not transfer tokens, but only activates voting capabilities for the designated address. Delegation can be changed by the token holder at any time and will remain in effect until changed or the tokens are sold. The ZK token was launched on Binance on June 17, 2024 with a Seed tag.

Controversy surrounding the implementation of ZKsync Airdrop

Currently, there is unrest over the ZKsync airdrop regarding its fairness and the way it was carried out. The airdrop is criticized for not having an efficient mechanism to prevent a Sybil attack.

ZKsync versus optimistic update packages

Optimistic rollups and ZKsync are two approaches to maintaining the integrity of transactions and their settlement. Optimistic rollups expect all operations to be legitimate and rely on nodes to validate transactions as soon as they are executed. In case of problems, transactions are adjusted. This method may be affected by human factors. On the other hand, ZKsync uses ZKPs for transaction security, which ensures greater accuracy.

In terms of time to settle, optimistic rollups have a seven-day challenge period to undo questionable transactions, leading to slow settlement times. ZKsync relies on ZKPs to verify transactions. Additionally, transactions are completed upon successful verification, eliminating the dispute period and allowing for faster settlement.

Benefits of ZKsync

ZKsync uses zk-rollups to offload transactions from the main Ethereum network, reducing transaction fees and time required. This makes it possible for Ethereum to accommodate more users and decentralized applications (DApps). Because ZKsync is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), developers can easily port their decentralized applications (DApps) to ZKsync without changing the code too much.

Closing thoughts

ZKsync uses zk-rollups and ZKPs to present a Layer-2 design that speeds up transactions and reduces fees on the Ethereum network. ZKsync is therefore more secure than optimistic rollups and ensures faster processing. Furthermore, the EVM integration makes deploying the scaling solutions easy for developers, making this technique a potential solution to the blockchain scalability problem.
