Making music with one click on Bitcoin? Weird, but we’ll take it!

TL;DR

  • Most people think of Bitcoin ‘Ordinals’ as Bitcoin NFTs…but they are more than that. The Ordinals system is a way to upload all types of data to the Bitcoin network.

  • The ‘Descent into Darkness Music Engine’ is a super basic piece of software, which now lives permanently on the Bitcoin Network.

  • The program allows you to click a button and in return get a randomly generated Gameboy-esque tune (try it yourself!).

  • Music engines may not be the best use case for Ordinals, but the more people tinker with these kinds of creations, the closer we get to realizing a range of sustainable applications.

Most people think of Bitcoin ‘Ordinals’ as Bitcoin NFTs.

…but they are more than that.

The Ordinals system is a way to upload all types of data to the Bitcoin network. That data can form works of art, games, meme coins…

Or even one music engine.

The ‘Descent into Darkness Music Engine’ is a super basic piece of software, which now lives permanently on the Bitcoin Network.

The program allows you to click a button and in return get a randomly generated Gameboy-esque tune (try it yourself!).

Is it necessary? No.

Is this the future of music making? Let’s hope not.

Is this something we want to see more of? Absolute.

Why? Because fun but seemingly useless tinkering like this creates a signal over time:

The more an idea is researched/adopted → the more it signals demand → the more companies are built to meet that demand.

For example:

In the early days of the internet, people started making nice but seemingly useless websites on GeoCities (like that one guy who official homepage for his cat, Jerry C.)

Things like this signaled the demand for platforms like MySpace, which then proved the “social model” that us Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, TikTok etc.

Music engines may not be the best use case for Ordinals, but the more people tinker, the closer we get to realizing a range of sustainable applications.

Nice!
