King Charles decides that ‘rapidly advancing AI’ must be ‘safe and secure’ at the AI Safety Summit

Ministers from around the world gathered today for the world’s first ever summit on the security of artificial intelligence (AI), held at Bletchley Park, the historic site where Alan Turing cracked the Enigma code during World War II. King Charles of England and Wales also made remarks, underscoring the urgency of ensuring the safe and ethical development of AI.

In her opening speech, British Science Secretary Michelle Donelan emphasized that AI has enormous potential to benefit humanity, from curing diseases to combating climate change. However, unchecked progress can also concentrate power, undermine democracy, and even lead to existential threats as systems grow beyond human capabilities.

Donelan emphasized the need for collaboration between countries, developers and civil society to steer the trajectory of AI towards the good. She announced that the summit would produce a summary of the actions that different groups should take, building on the previously agreed Bletchley Declaration that commits countries to mitigating the risks of AI.

US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo highlighted new voluntary commitments from US AI companies to ensure models are safe. She also announced that the US will launch its own AI Safety Institute. Raimondo called for global coordination, stating: “We must look for global solutions to global problems.”

In a unique video speech, King Charles pointed out the “clear need” to “keep rapidly advancing AI technology safe.” He stressed the need for international cooperation with great urgency to address the risks, comparing this to efforts to tackle climate change. The King stated that it is the duty of those in positions of responsibility to ensure that AI benefits all humanity.

Ian Hogarth, chair of the UK AI Task Force, noted the small community of experts developing the most powerful AI models. He said that while he is optimistic about AI’s potential, unchecked progress could outpace safety measures. Hogarth emphasized the need to base discussions on empiricism and called the summit a brief moment to shape the trajectory of AI.

The summit demonstrates growing concerns among world leaders about revolutionary advances in AI. With King Charles adding his voice, it is clear that mitigating risk has become an urgent priority at the highest levels. The coming days will show whether enough concrete steps are taken to direct this powerful technology towards humanity.
