Auction for childhood cancer research attracts major crypto artists

A prominent crypto influencer is channeling his personal journey and using his platform for a meaningful mission: raising money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital through cryptocurrency donations and NFT sales.

Pseudonymous influencer Leap’s upcoming initiative debuts Friday afternoon with an art auction at Art Basel Miami, bringing together the worlds of blockchain and visual arts to support life-saving research. It marks the culmination of months of personal and professional transformation, fueled by his determination to make the crypto space a force for good.

In an exclusive interview with DeclutterLeap said that in a space often dominated by speculation and quick profits, he became an increasingly reluctant participant, longing for a deeper sense of purpose. Leap was unhappy with the way the Web3 space was going.

“People were raising millions of dollars for questionable projects, and it felt so superficial,” he recalls.

The time has finally come! After many sleepless nights it is time for the auction. Super proud of my team who helped me put this together. I have many to thank, but I’ll save this post for later. If you haven’t signed up yet, please do so. https://t.co/hsWMaaadiyT

But it wasn’t until personal tragedy struck that his path became clear.

Earlier this year, his father was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer. The diagnosis sent Leap into a period of reflection.

“When you’re faced with that kind of pain, it forces you to rethink everything,” he said. “I’m not blaming anyone, but the constant reminder of the turmoil my family is in is a good thing because it lights a fire under my butt and makes me push harder and my team push harder.”

On his birthday, March 19, Leap decided to put his frustration into action. He posted with a wallet address for a crypto donation to donate to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

“I thought I’d raise maybe $10,000, $20,000 tops,” he said. However, Leap was stunned when his community contributed more than $100,000 in just 24 hours. He donated every cent.

The overwhelming response from the crypto community was an eye-opener. “That’s when I realized the potential of this space to create real impact,” he said.

After the donation, St. Jude’s Web3 chapter invited him to visit the Memphis campus. That trip confirmed his resolve. In the Danny Thomas Research Center’s iconic Flags of the World room, surrounded by banners representing the hospital’s global mission, Leap said he was moved to tears.

“It felt like divine intervention,” he recalled. “I finally found a purpose that was not superficial, but that could really shape crypto.”

He took two months away from social media to ruminate, plan and build a team to execute his vision. Over the past nine months, Leap said he has poured more than $200,000 of his own money into the project, assembling a team of developers, designers and legal experts.

I’m at a loss for words. This 1/1 artwork was created by Groowut, the genius behind fwog’s art, especially for our St. Jude charity auction. This unique piece can be bid on for 24 hours at Magic Eden, starting on December 6 at 2 p.m. pic.twitter.com/KgI9xOMXy4

“I put my money where my mouth is,” he explained. “I didn’t want to be another failed startup that burns investors’ money. This had to be real and it had to work.”

His company, which has not yet been unveiled to the public, aims to merge art, technology and philanthropy in an effort to bring transparency, efficiency and innovation to charitable giving.

To kick off the initiative, they hosted Friday’s live auction featuring works from leading digital artists, including a highly anticipated one-of-one piece expected to fetch six figures.

“Art is at the core of crypto,” Leap said. “It’s what makes space human: it connects us in ways that go beyond profit.”

The Art Basel auction, which also takes place online through NFT marketplace Magic Eden, features unique works from more than 30 leading digital artists.

Notable contributors and donors to the auction include sustainable NFT projects Azuki and Doodles, as well as Art Blocks founder and “Chromie Squiggle creator Erick “Snowfro” Calderon, Patrick Amadon, Jimena Buena Vida, Vinnie Hager, Efdot, Groowut (artist behind meme coin Fwog), and more.

“Art is the soul of crypto,” Leap said. “Everything in this space – from NFTs to memes – starts and ends with art. Supporting artists underpins the foundation of this industry.”

For Leap, this initiative is more than just a fundraiser; it is a statement about crypto’s potential to create meaningful change.

“Crypto excels at raising funds, especially after big wins,” he noted. “But we must modernize and decentralize philanthropy to build trust and transparency.”

As Leap prepares for the auction, he remains optimistic. “This space has so much potential to do good,” he said. “We just have to use it in the right way.”

With Art Basel as a starting point, Leap’s journey from personal pain to purposeful innovation is poised to make waves both in crypto and beyond.

“This space has so much potential to do good,” he said. “We just have to use it in the right way.”
