Bitcoin Facing Short-Term Challenges, But Long-Term Outlook Improving
Bitcoin’s journey towards higher prices is facing hurdles in the short term, but there are positive signs for the future, according to a recent report.
In a recent analysis by European asset manager CoinShares’ Head of Research, James Butterfill, it was noted that stronger-than-expected core inflation could lead to tighter Federal Reserve policies, potentially limiting Bitcoin’s rise to below $80,000 for the time being.
However, Butterfill highlighted that the longer-term prospects for Bitcoin are promising, especially if the U.S. Treasury’s bond buyback program fails to lower long-term yields. This failure could reinforce the narrative of currency debasement, which has historically supported both Bitcoin and gold.
The report stated, “Today’s CPI data may dampen immediate upside potential due to the increased likelihood of tighter monetary policy. But the failure of the Treasury’s current buying program could pave the way for significant intervention in the future.”
The data released on Friday revealed that the consumer price index, excluding food and energy, rose by 0.3% in August, exceeding expectations.
According to CME’s FedWatch tool, there is an 85% probability of higher interest rates following the upcoming Federal Reserve meeting. Historically, Bitcoin has performed well in a low-interest-rate environment.
Despite the expanded bond buyback program by the U.S. Treasury, long-term yields have not significantly decreased. If these yields remain elevated, Butterfill suggested that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent may need to implement a more aggressive buying program to drive down borrowing costs.
In August, Bitcoin experienced a notable price surge after the announcement of the Treasury’s plan to double its long-dated bond buybacks. This development reignited discussions about the debasement trade, where investors seek assets as a hedge against currency devaluation.
Both Bitcoin and gold have benefitted from the debasement trade as the weakening dollar has driven investors towards alternative stores of value.
