HIVE Digital Technologies recently disclosed that its Bitcoin mining and GPU cloud businesses have been generating over $1 million in combined average daily revenue from August 21 to September 10. This update sheds light on how the company’s pivot towards AI technology is impacting its current operations.
During this period, the GPU cloud segment contributed approximately $100,000 per day to the total revenue, accounting for less than 10% of the reported figure. On the other hand, Bitcoin mining accounted for more than 90% of the revenue, showcasing that mining activities still play a significant role in driving the company’s financial performance.
HIVE reported that it mined an average of around 12 Bitcoins per day during this timeframe, representing about 2% of the global network production. The revenue figures provided are preliminary and unaudited estimates by management, influenced by factors such as Bitcoin prices, network difficulty, and operational conditions.
While GPU cloud services are starting to generate operating revenue for HIVE, mining activities continue to be the primary revenue driver. The company has secured over $600 million in total contract value for GPU cloud services year to date, encompassing customer agreements and letters of intent. It’s important to note that total contract value does not equate to recognized revenue and does not guarantee future revenue.
Following reports of a $350 million AI cloud agreement and the significant financial commitments associated with a $185 million GPU infrastructure buildout, HIVE’s latest update underscores the revenue-generating potential of its AI business. However, the company’s commercial pipeline’s substantial growth hinges on the successful delivery of these agreements over time.
HIVE also revealed that AI operations contributed less than 5% of the company’s global daily revenue in August and plans to wind down mining activities at certain facilities. The company is exploring the possibility of repurposing these sites for high-performance computing, aligning with the growing demand for AI infrastructure.
As HIVE navigates this transition phase, the focus will be on converting signed agreements and letters of intent into recognized GPU cloud revenue while maintaining the financial stability provided by Bitcoin mining. This dual-speed transition highlights the company’s strategic shift towards AI technology while leveraging its existing mining operations for continued cash flow.
