Sidewap, a trading platform operating on the Liquid network, recently reopened its markets on Liquid while the route back to Bitcoin remained closed. This split allowed Liquid Bitcoin to have a market price even before holders could convert L-BTC into BTC.
As of 22:55 UTC on Sept. 10, the Blockstream explorer endpoint showed 4,229 L-BTC outstanding, while a Bitcoin address reading for the cited federation reserve showed 3,601 BTC. This indicated a reserve coverage of about 85.15% and a gap of approximately 627 BTC at that moment.
In a statement released on Sept. 10, Sidewap mentioned that Liquid was producing blocks and all Sidewap markets were open. However, new peg-ins and peg-outs through Sidewap remained closed as the Liquid Federation continued its security review.
Sidewap is responsible for running the trading venue and wallet, while the Liquid Federation controls the Bitcoin reserve and authorized peg-out process. Blockstream provides core technology and publishes network status. These different roles explain how venue trading can resume before federation redemption.
Trading provides L-BTC with a price, but not an exit. While an order book records the price counterparties accept, a peg-out burns L-BTC on Liquid and directs the federation to release BTC on the Bitcoin network.
The reserve gap that followed the Sept. 6 incident was evident in a transaction that showed 3,400 BTC returning on Sept. 7. This transaction matched earlier recovery coverage and suggested ongoing challenges in maintaining reserve coverage.
Liquid’s restart process is staged, with block production resuming in a controlled mode without transactions as of 10:00 UTC on Sept. 10. Transactions were dependent on the separately published operating status.
Restoring the peg requires reserves and a working bridge. Liquid’s protocol defines one L-BTC as a claim backed by one BTC held by the federation. Direct peg-outs require a registered Peg-out Authorization Key, and a dependable exit relies on sufficient reserve BTC and functioning authorized infrastructure.
In conclusion, the reopening of Sidewap’s markets on Liquid signifies progress in the recovery process. However, until peg-outs resume and operating conditions are clear, the market price of L-BTC will continue to reflect confidence in the network’s ability to restore the peg effectively.
