What Is Arc? The Stablecoin Blockchain From USDC Issuer Circle

Circle, the company known for issuing the USDC stablecoin, recently unveiled a groundbreaking blockchain platform called Arc. This platform, which went live to the public on September 16, 2026, is specifically tailored to support stablecoin-based applications.

Stablecoins are digital tokens whose value is pegged to traditional fiat currencies like the US dollar. As the adoption of stablecoins has been steadily increasing, Circle recognized the need for a blockchain infrastructure that could cater to the unique requirements of stablecoin transactions on a large scale.

Rachel Mayer, the VP of Product Management at Circle, explained that feedback from enterprises and developers highlighted the necessity for predictable costs, deterministic settlement finality, and privacy features that comply with regulatory standards. To address these concerns, Circle set out to create Arc, a blockchain platform that aims to revolutionize stablecoin finance.

One of the key distinguishing features of Arc is its use of USDC as the native gas for transactions. By utilizing a stablecoin backed by real-world assets, Arc eliminates the volatility associated with using speculative tokens to pay for transaction fees. This model ensures that fees remain stable and predictable, denominated in USDC and directed to an on-chain Arc Treasury.

In addition to its fee structure, Arc boasts a robust consensus mechanism powered by Malachite, a Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) engine based on Tendermint. Validator selection is permissioned, prioritizing operational resilience, geographic diversity, and regulatory compliance. Notable industry players like BlackRock, Mastercard, and Visa are among the validators running the network, emphasizing the network’s commitment to security and compliance.

Furthermore, Arc’s design enables instant and irreversible transaction settlement, known as deterministic finality, which enhances the efficiency and reliability of transactions on the platform. This feature, combined with optional privacy controls and interoperability with traditional financial systems, positions Arc as a cutting-edge solution for stablecoin-focused applications.

Several prominent institutions and ecosystem partners have already joined the Arc network, leveraging its stablecoin-optimized infrastructure for a wide range of financial activities. From lending and trading to payments and collateralization, Arc supports a diverse array of services provided by leading industry players like Aave, Uniswap, and Binance.

In summary, Circle’s Arc platform represents a significant milestone in the evolution of blockchain technology, specifically tailored to meet the demands of stablecoin finance. With its innovative approach to gas fees, settlement finality, and consensus mechanisms, Arc is poised to drive the next wave of innovation in the stablecoin ecosystem. DTCC, the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, has announced plans to enable the tokenization of assets held in its custody on the network. This move, however, is not expected to happen until the second half of 2027. This development will mark a significant step forward in the digitization of traditional assets, allowing for greater efficiency and accessibility in the financial industry.

One of the key components of this initiative is the ARC token, which will play a central role in the coordination mechanism of the Arc network as it transitions to a proof-of-stake consensus model. The ARC token will be used to incentivize validators who maintain the network and process transactions. Stakers of ARC tokens will also receive benefits such as discounted transaction rates and preferential access to ecosystem partners.

Circle, the company behind the Arc network, recently published the Arc white paper outlining the details of the ARC token and its role within the network. The initial supply of ARC tokens is set at 10 billion, with new tokens expected to be issued at an annual rate of 2-3%. The long-term goal is to achieve “inflation neutrality” as the network grows and evolves.

In addition to the ARC token, Arc also offers tools for AI agents to transact independently on the network. These tools include agent wallets, spending limits, and nanopayments. Circle has reported that USDC, the stablecoin issued by Circle, accounts for a significant portion of agent-driven transaction volume on the network.

Arc also includes a modular privacy system designed to balance compliance with confidentiality. This system allows institutions to selectively disclose data to regulators or auditors using view keys. Over time, Arc plans to support additional privacy features such as zero-knowledge proofs, multi-party computation, and fully homomorphic encryption.

With the launch of the ARC token and the development of the Arc network, Circle aims to strengthen the broader multichain ecosystem and unlock new use cases and institutional liquidity on-chain. By connecting fiat and USDC across multiple blockchains, Circle’s tools aim to provide seamless and efficient cross-chain transfers for users and developers.

Overall, the launch of the ARC token and the development of the Arc network represent a significant milestone in the blockchain ecosystem. With its focus on tokenizing traditional assets and providing privacy features for institutions, Arc has the potential to become a key player in the evolving digital economy. Arc, a blockchain startup focused on creating a purpose-specific chain for programmable, compliant financial operations, has recently secured a significant investment of $75 million in a funding round led by VC firm Andreessen Horowitz. Other participants in this round include BlackRock and Apollo Funds, signaling strong support from major players in the investment space.

The goal of Arc is to expand the utility of stablecoins beyond simple payments and into real-time settlement, tokenization, and global capital. By providing a platform that is specifically designed for these types of financial operations, Arc aims to address the growing demand for more sophisticated blockchain solutions in the market.

According to Arc CEO, regulatory clarity is a key driver for institutional adoption of blockchain technology. By ensuring that their platform is compliant with existing regulations and designed to meet the needs of enterprise clients, Arc is positioning itself as a leader in the space.

The recent funding round will enable Arc to further develop their platform and expand their reach in the market. With the support of top investors like Andreessen Horowitz, BlackRock, and Apollo Funds, Arc is well-positioned to make a significant impact in the world of blockchain technology.
