Quantus, a new blockchain network, has recently launched its mainnet with a focus on quantum defense in the world of cryptocurrency. The network is built with privacy-preserving transactions, a limited supply cap of 21 million coins, and a unique proof-of-work mining system that incorporates post-quantum cryptography from the get-go.
Unlike traditional blockchains that rely on elliptic-curve cryptography, Quantus utilizes ML-DSA, a digital signature standard developed by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology in 2024. This technology is specifically designed to withstand potential attacks from powerful quantum computers, which could pose a significant threat to the security of existing crypto networks.
Quantus aims to address a $2.7 trillion security risk within the crypto market that remains vulnerable to quantum threats. While other networks like NEAR and Algorand have started integrating post-quantum security measures, Quantus is taking a proactive approach by implementing these technologies from the start, avoiding potential migration challenges in the future.
In addition to its focus on quantum defense, Quantus also incorporates transaction privacy through its Wormhole feature and an aggregation layer to enhance transaction throughput. The network targets 12-second blocks and has demonstrated testing reaching up to 430 transactions per second, showcasing its scalability potential.
However, the implementation of post-quantum security does come with trade-offs. A single ML-DSA transaction on the Quantus network is approximately 7 kilobytes, significantly larger than a typical bitcoin transaction. To address this issue, Quantus utilizes transaction aggregation on its layer one (L1) to optimize efficiency as transaction volume increases.
The network distributes its native QTC coin through proof-of-work mining, with no preferential treatment for Quantus Labs. Prior to its launch, Quantus underwent reviews from reputable entities such as Neodyme, Eiger, Hashcloak, and V12, with a public audit competition hosted by Immunefi to ensure security and transparency.
