Dogecoin may have started as a joke, but this upgrade is not one.
DOGEOS, the app layer developed by the MyDoge Wallet team, has submitted a formal proposal to Dogecoin Core that introduces a new on-code with which the network could verify the network (ZKPS) (ZKPS).
Developers strive to transform an unused part of the script system into a tool that can verify cryptographic evidence, starting with ‘Groth16’ (a specific type of proof that is used a lot in ZK systems) and to enable future upgrades.
This would enable Dogecoin to support more advanced, off-chain applications, such as rollups and smart contracts, while maintaining the speed and simplicity of the main chain.
The approach is modular because of design, because evidence systems are modus selectable and the OPPODE behavior is strictly opt-in. If the evidence verifies, the script continues; If not, it will fail. Old nodes remain compatible and treat the oncode as a no-up. No surprise fork, no VM -Bloat.
“The proposal from Op_Checkzkp is an important technical step forward for Dogecoin,” wrote the Dogeos team in the proposal. “It expands the proof-of-work blockchain from a basic payment system to a platform that can support Defi, Gaming, Identity and other verifiable on-frame applications.”
In contrast to the VM-Heavy model of Ethereum, the vision of Dogecoin is minimal and pragmatic: calculation remains off-chain; Dogecoin simply checks the coupons.
“Dogecoin who gets the ability to integrate with ZK L2S is the type of interoperability we need to build ecosystem,” said Tim Stebbing, director of the Dogecoin Foundation. “It enables the L1 to concentrate on the fastest, best, most fun blockchain and exchange means for all humanity.”
Dogeos also stated that it can run an EVM-compatible ZKVM developed a virtual machine with which Ethereum-Native applications can run directly on Dogecoin infrastructure.
Yet all this is not without considerations. Verifying a Groth16 certificate takes 10-20ms and you cannot prove hundreds of stuff in a block of 1 MB without encountering validation repeats.
That is why the proposal includes strict limits of one ZKP per script, five per block, at least before the start. The move comes as an institutional interest in doge riles in the past week, with companies such as Bit Origin protect up to $ 500 million in financing to build a Dogecoin Treasury.
