Donald Trump reportedly selected Brian Quintenz, the current head of A16Z Crypto, to Leiden’s Commodity Futures Trading Commission in Leiden, FOX Business Journalist Eleanor Terret reported on 12 February.
If confirmed, Quintenz replaces acting chairman Caroline Pham.
Who is Qutenzz?
Quintenz, who served as a CFTC commissioner from 2017 to 2021, played a key role in promoting technological supervision at the agency. He was chairman of the Technology Advisory Committee and supported the idea of a self-regulating body for the crypto sector.
After leaving the committee, he joined A16Z Crypto, where he played an important role in shaping policy strategies. A16Z in particular is an important crypto-oriented risk capital company and was an important financial force in the 2024 elections, which contributes $ 47 million to fairshake and other political organizations.
His nomination indicates the broader intention of Trump to redefine financial regulations, in particular on the markets of the crypto and derivatives.
If the congress adopts the market structure legislation that grant more authority to the CFTC, Quintenz will be responsible for drawing up interpretative rules that determine how the agency enforces this new regulations.
The crypto industry in particular has long argued for CFTC supervision, with the argument that it would offer a more innovative-friendly legal approach than the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Response industry
Although the White House has officially announced the nomination of Qutenzz, important industrial figures have already approved it.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong and other crypto leaders have welcomed the decision and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the agency.
Crypto -lawyer Jeremy Hogan emphasized that the CFTC chairman could become more influential in crypto regulations than the leadership of the SEC and called Quttenz a strong choice for the committee.
Hogan said:
“The head of the CFTC will ultimately be more important for the crypto space than the head of the sec. And Brian Quintez is a solid ‘A!’ “
In the meantime, financial lawyer Scott Johnsson emphasized the role of Qutenz in the launch of CME Bitcoin Futures, who cleared the way for Spot Bitcoin ETFs. According to him, this strengthens confidence in his ability to effectively guide the agency.
