FTX co-founder and former CTO Gary Wang continues to cooperate with US authorities after testifying at the trial of his roommate and ex-colleague Sam Bankman-Fried.
Wang is among the FTX executives charged following the collapse of the FTX crypto exchange. He pleaded guilty to four criminal counts in December 2022.
In a sentencing memorandum filed Nov. 6, Wang’s attorneys ask the court to consider how their client cooperated with the government and provided assistance beyond Bankman-Fried’s prosecution.
“Gary has made himself available to testify at two other trials in this district. He has met with government and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) special agents to support efforts to use FTX’s database to advance other ongoing investigations.
The lawyers say Wang has also worked with U.S. authorities to develop tools that could potentially limit the risks of financial fraud.
“In an extraordinary next step, Gary has worked with the government to design and build a new software tool to detect potential financial fraud in public markets and, at the direction of prosecutors, is currently developing a separate tool aimed at identifying of illegal cryptocurrency activities. exchanges.”
The court document, which was filed prior to Wang’s Nov. 20 sentencing, asks the court to spare him the 31-year prison sentence.
“A prison sentence would disregard his relative culpability and exceptional cooperation, and would unnecessarily disrupt his ability to advance the government and continue to contribute to his family and the world.”
