Brent Crude Approaches $100 as Middle East Tensions Escalate
Recent Houthi attacks on Saudi energy sites and escalating clashes between the US and Iran over the vital shipping route of the Strait of Hormuz have pushed Brent crude (BRENT) prices closer to the $100 per barrel mark. This has prompted Goldman Sachs to revise its year-end forecasts for oil prices.
Reports from IBTimes indicate that oil prices surged towards $100 a barrel on Tuesday due to renewed attacks on Middle Eastern energy infrastructure and shipping, heightening concerns about global supply.
The increase in oil prices was primarily triggered by a series of Houthi attacks on southern Saudi Arabia, targeting energy and civilian facilities in cities like Jazan, Abha, Najran, and Khamis Mushait. These attacks resulted in injuries to 73 individuals and caused fires and temporary shutdowns at some energy sites.
Additionally, over the weekend, US forces retaliated by targeting three Iranian crude oil tankers following a ballistic missile attack by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps on two American Navy warships, as reported by U.S. Central Command.
Goldman Sachs has adjusted its forecasts, now anticipating Brent to reach $85 a barrel in December and WTI at $80, which are both $5 higher than their previous estimates. The bank has warned that Brent could potentially surpass $120 if Gulf production and exports continue to be significantly impeded, especially if attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea escalate.
Despite the spike in crude prices, the market has managed to mitigate the impact by tapping into various sources of supply. Goldman Sachs analysts noted that commercial oil inventories in OECD countries have seen modest declines, strategic reserves have been released by governments, and additional barrels have been sourced from oil in transit and stockpiles in China.
However, these supply sources are limited, and the national average gasoline price in the US has already risen to $4.15 a gallon from $4.02 a month earlier, according to AAA.
