The biggest vulnerability in your Bitcoin wallet might be the shipping label

Hardware wallets are known for their ability to protect private keys and keep your cryptocurrency safe. However, the process of purchasing a hardware wallet may expose your identity due to the paperwork involved.

When you buy a hardware wallet, you typically provide the company with your name and address so they can ship the device to you. While you may not think about this information once you’ve received and set up the wallet, records of your purchase may still exist in the delivery company’s system for years.

Recently, Trezor disclosed that approximately 67,000 additional US customers were affected by a shipping-provider breach, bringing the total number of affected customers to 80,689. The company assured that the breach did not compromise their systems or devices, and no funds were stolen. However, the leaked information included contact and delivery details, which could potentially be used for identity theft.

The information obtained from a hardware wallet order, such as name and address, can be used by scammers to impersonate the buyer and attempt to obtain sensitive information like wallet backups. This underscores the importance of safeguarding personal information, as even the smallest details can make a scam seem legitimate.

It’s crucial for businesses to ensure that sensitive information is collected and retained only for legitimate purposes, and securely disposed of when no longer needed. This responsibility extends to third-party vendors who handle shipping and delivery, as they must adhere to data protection practices to prevent breaches.

Privacy should not end with the purchase of a hardware wallet. Customers can take measures to enhance privacy during deliveries, such as using parcel lockers and neutral packaging. Manufacturers, on the other hand, should minimize the collection of unnecessary information and ensure that contractors delete records once their job is complete.

In conclusion, while hardware wallets offer security for your cryptocurrency, it’s essential to be mindful of the potential privacy risks associated with the purchasing process. By implementing proper data protection measures and staying vigilant against scams, both businesses and customers can work together to safeguard sensitive information and prevent identity theft.
