Blockchain

The Philippines has made progress in digitizing its critical sectors and is working with key industry players to harness the power and potential of emerging technologies to support this large-scale initiative.

Apart from cooperation with neighboring countries, the Philippines also launched a series of events to educate the general public about emerging technologies, especially blockchain, in preparation for its widespread use as the government strives to future-proof the country.

Local industry players have long touted the Philippines as Southeast Asia’s next blockchain hub, following a surge in adoption of digital currencies and non-fungible tokens, which are being hyped by the gaming sector.

One of the key players supporting the digital transformation of the Philippines is global blockchain technology company nChain, which signed an agreement with the Bataan provincial government in late January aimed at streamlining government services and procedures.

Stefan Matthews, Executive Chairman of nChain Group, and Brendan Lee, Co-Founder of Elas Digital, also attended the Global Blockchain Summit in Bataan last December, outlining plans to help the country realize its full potential in blockchain adoption. reach.

The collaboration between nChain and Bataan didn’t end there. On May 15, nChain hosted a forum on how they plan to implement blockchain solutions in Bataan.

State agency Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), led by newly appointed Director General Tereso Panga, is supporting the national government in its digitization efforts by recently signing an agreement with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).

Under the deal signed last Thursday, PEZA and the DICT will work to develop a “more synchronized and well-coordinated ICT system in the ecozones,” which will pave the way for more efficient and faster delivery of services to Filipinos.

Speaking at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Pasay City, Panga said the latest partnership with DICT would also benefit the Philippines in improving data protection and maintaining transparency through the adoption of e-governance. This is in addition to improving the country’s competitiveness as an investment hub for companies looking to set up operations in the region.

DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy and Panga said they intend to achieve all of this by creating interoperable systems and applications, which will be done after a review and evaluation of existing networks.

“By adopting e-governance and promoting the development of different solutions, together we can eliminate bureaucratic inefficiencies, reduce red tape and provide faster and easier access to critical government services,” said Uy.

This is not the first time PEZA has expressed support for the administration of Ferdinand “BongBong” Marcos Jr.’s 8-point socio-economic agenda.

Earlier this May, PEZA unveiled several projects and partnerships with key government agencies and private institutions for its AmBisyon Natin 2040 project, a long-term plan that aims to develop initiatives to realize the life that Filipinos envision for the next 25 years.

Meanwhile, the DICT recently announced its support for the partnership between BlockchainSpace and telecom giant Smart Communications, which held a press conference on May 18 on how they plan to increase Web3 adoption in the Philippines.
