How the proof of history works
A verifiable delay function (VDF) is at the heart of PoH. The VDF forms a time cryptographic chain because each new hash in the series is based on the previous one. Validators then extend transactions chronologically to this chronology. Since each transaction already has a timestamp, the nodes do not need to synchronize according to timing. This significantly reduces latency and allows Solana to achieve speeds impossible in other blockchains. PoH does not work alone. It goes hand in hand with Proof of Stake (PoS). PoS checks and verifies the transactions and PoH ensures that the transactions are executed in the correct order. All these mechanisms give Solana a special advantage in both speed and energy consumption.
Why evidence of history is important

The critics mention that there is a risk of centralization as the VDF series could, in theory, culminate in a single point of failure once ruined. Network congestion and outages between 2021 and 2023 are still part of Solana’s history, but recent upgrades will address these issues as well.
