In a recent study conducted by the USENIX Association, researchers have discovered that common mistakes related to testnet addresses, reused contracts, and exposed private keys have resulted in significant financial losses on both the Ethereum and BNB Chain networks. The on-chain analysis of millions of addresses revealed a total of 65,340 high-risk instances linked to the misuse of contracts and externally owned accounts.
Address misuse, as defined in the study, refers to the inadvertent transfer of cryptocurrency to the wrong wallet. This could involve sending funds to a test-network address that is incompatible with the real chain, using an outdated or recycled smart-contract address, or sending tokens to an account with a compromised private key. Such errors can have severe consequences, leading to the loss of valuable assets in the crypto space.
The report highlights that sending cryptocurrency to incorrect contract addresses resulted in losses of 22,738 ETH and 8,681 BNB. On the other hand, transferring funds to regular wallets with leaked private keys led to even larger losses of 104,245 ETH and 9,045 BNB. These losses underscore the importance of vigilance and proper security measures when interacting with blockchain addresses.
The research was carried out by a team of experts from Sun Yat-sen University, Peking University, and Zhejiang University, shedding light on the pervasive nature of address misuse in the crypto ecosystem. The findings serve as a reminder of the risks associated with negligent behavior, misoperations, or a lack of understanding when it comes to handling digital assets.
