Ethereum Layer 2s Surges Past 10 Million Active Addresses, Transaction Volume Reaches 5.19x Mainnet Levels

Ethereum Layer 2 solutions start 2025 with remarkable momentum as the number of weekly active addresses rises to 10.18 million.

The current figure indicates an increase of 6.84% from the previous week. Accordingly, this increase brings Layer 2 engagement close to all-time highs, reflecting the growing adoption of these scaling solutions.

According to data from GrowThePie.xyz, Layer 2 platforms now handle 5.19 times the transaction volume of the Ethereum mainnet.

Ethereum L2s leads the activity rankings

The Ethereum Layer 2 solutions leading this attack include the Base blockchain from Coinbase, Arbitrum, Taiko, and Optimism.

In terms of total value locked (TVL), Arbitrum leads with the highest value, with a value of $18.45 billion. Closely following is the Base network with $14.49 billion TVL, while Optimism is in third place with $7.41 billion TVL.

In terms of number of transactions, Base leads with 10.84 million transactions, while Arbitrum is next with 2.2 million annual transactions. Essentially, Arbitrum is far behind Base by a margin of about 8 million transactions.

Notably, these huge transaction numbers for both networks are reflected in their revenue figures. Arbitrum’s annual revenue is $62,970, while Base has a much higher annual revenue of $603,510.

Additionally, Base also emerged as the leader in active addresses, with 793,550 active addresses. Arbitrum came second with 334,970 active addresses.

Overall, the consistent increase in Layer 2 activity, especially since mid-2023, points to their critical role in scaling Ethereum to meet growing demand. Users are increasingly turning to these solutions for DeFi applications, NFT trading, and other on-chain activities without the high fees historically associated with Ethereum’s mainchain.

In terms of transaction fees, Base ranks 16 despite its relatively low fee of $0.013, while other platforms offer even lower transaction fees.

This past week, the total number of addresses communicating with multiple Layer 2 chains decreased slightly by 19.81% compared to the previous week.
