Ethereum Dev Federico Carrone was held in Turkey because of alleged ties with a privacy tool, but is now free. He believes that the case comes from earlier investigation into Tornado -Contant money. However, the legal issue remains unresolved.
Ethereum [ETH] Core developer Federico Carrone (known as “Fede’s trainee” on X) is “safe and free” after having spent 24 hours in detention in Turkey on alleged ties with an Ethereum privacy protocol.
His release comes after rapid intervention of friends and contacts worldwide.
However, the legal case against him remains unresolved.
Ethereum devs detention in Turkey ends
Carrone said Turkish Minister of Internal Affairs accused him of “helping others in abusing Ethereum” through a privacy tool.
He believes that the accusation comes from a January 2022 research paper that he has co-author of Ethereum and Tornado Cash Privacy.

He clarified,
“We never helped anyone to carry out illegal activities, it was pure research into mixers and their qualities.”
The incident contributed to growing concern about the treatment of developers working on open-source privacy protocols.
Co-founders of Tornado Cash Alexey Ptsev and Roman Storm have had to deal with similar legal battles, with storms awaiting a judgment in a speech-made American test that could create a precedent for the sector.
Global support and release
Carrone was told that he would lose access to his phone and communication. But within a few hours friends from the UA, the UK, the US, Europe, Argentina (and even the Catholic Church) entered.
Some handed in direct contact with Senior Turkish officials. Thanks to those who stood with him, Carrone said,
“I will never forget. I hope to be able to give back to all those who helped me.”
Even members of the Solana [SOL] Ecosystem offered help, a rare show of unity in blockchain communities.
Carrone has since moved to Europe
Although free, the case is still active in Turkey. His lawyer builds up a defense and he is not excluded to return to delete his name.
“We still do not have the full picture of what happened or why it happened, but we will bring in the best team that we can and resolve this.

Wider performance and ETH donation
The test of Carrone reflects a broader action against privacy-focused developers and raises urgent questions about publishing or contributing to open-source privacy tools can be criminalized.
In a show of solidarity, Carrone donated $ 500,000 to ETH to the legal defense of Roman Storm.
Speaking of generous support, He said,
“The legal defense of novel is important because builders need to know everywhere that they can push innovation ahead and that the community will stand behind them if they do.”
