AUSTRAC registration removals: 45 providers affected

Australia’s financial intelligence regulator AUSTRAC has taken decisive action over the past year by canceling, suspending, or refusing to renew 45 remittance and virtual asset provider registrations. This move underscores the importance of compliance with the registration regime, as businesses that fail to meet regulatory requirements risk losing their permission to operate.

The affected registrations span both the remittance and virtual asset sectors, with AUSTRAC confirming that these businesses have been removed from its registers. CEO Brendan Thomas emphasized that businesses with canceled registrations are no longer able to conduct operations.

One notable case highlighted by AUSTRAC is the cancellation of GetCoins, a virtual asset service provider, which was linked to the disruption of alleged cryptocurrency investment scams. The regulator identified the business as BA Digital Ventures Pty Ltd, trading as GetCoins, and cited the cancellation decision as of June 4, 2026, predating the September announcement by three months.

According to AUSTRAC, it collaborated with the National Anti-Scam Centre to investigate GetCoins following customer complaints. The regulator requested information about the provider’s operations to evaluate its ability to manage money laundering risks. AUSTRAC alleged that GetCoins was exploited by organized cryptocurrency investment scams and stated that the cancellation helped disrupt such fraudulent activities.

It is important to note that while AUSTRAC described the alleged exploitation of GetCoins by scams, no direct involvement by the provider in organizing these scams was established. The disclosure focused on the disruption of illicit activities without specifying the amount recovered for customers or any criminal findings against the provider.

AUSTRAC’s registration requirements serve as a gateway to the market for businesses offering digital currency exchange or virtual asset services. Losing registration effectively bars these businesses from providing such services, as registration is a prerequisite for operating in these sectors.

The regulator has the authority to refuse registration applications, suspend or cancel existing registrations, or decline renewal based on perceived risks related to money laundering, terrorism financing, or other serious crimes. It can also impose registration conditions when unacceptable risks are identified.

AUSTRAC’s enforcement actions over the past year encompass a range of issues, including insufficient trading capacity, dormant businesses, insolvency, inadequate registration, failure to report changes, and significant money laundering or terrorism financing risks. These factors contribute to the broader enforcement landscape and are not specific findings against individual businesses like GetCoins.

In conclusion, AUSTRAC’s recent actions underscore the importance of regulatory compliance in the financial services sector. Businesses operating in the remittance and virtual asset space must adhere to registration requirements to avoid facing penalties that could jeopardize their operations.
