The largest US-based crypto exchange is reportedly being ordered to pay a fine for violating a directive from Russian authorities.

In May, the Roskomnadzor, which is responsible for monitoring Russia’s mass media, issued a directive requiring foreign companies to locate citizens’ data from July 1.

This was reported by the local business newspaper Vedomostia Moscow court has fined Coinbase along with another foreign entity, AIDA International, for failing to comply with the directive.

“Coinbase and AIDA International have been found guilty of an administrative violation under Part 8 of Art. 13.11 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation (the inability of the operator, when collecting personal data, to ensure the registration, systematization, accumulation and storage of data of citizens of the Russian Federation).”

Coinbase will be fined one million rubles, or about $10,500.

The report says that Coinbase and AIDA both received the minimum fine, but other companies have the option to pay higher fines, up to six million rubles, or about $65,090.

Last month, the court also fined videoconferencing platform Zoom 15 million rubles, or $62,725, for repeatedly refusing to locate Russian users’ data. In August, instant messaging app Telegram had to pay 50,000 rubles, or about $542.42.

The report says US tech companies Apple, WhatsApp, Match Group, Airbnb, Google, Twitch and Pinterest were also previously fined for the same violation.
