According to Santiment data, there has been a significant decrease in the number of non-empty wallets holding USDT on the Ethereum chain over the past 11 days. In fact, 251,350 wallets have been shed during this period, marking the steepest decline in such a short timeframe since the market turmoil following the FTX incident in December 2022. At the same time, Ethereum transaction fees have plummeted to just $0.095 per transfer.

USDT Wallets Are Shrinking Fast

The sharp contraction in the number of USDT wallets is a departure from the token’s typical growth trajectory. However, this reduction does not necessarily indicate a mass exodus of capital from the crypto space. It is possible that smaller holders are consolidating their balances, moving funds to Layer-2 networks, transitioning to USDC, or transferring assets back to centralized exchanges. Nevertheless, this rapid decline may suggest a risk-off sentiment among market participants as they reposition their portfolios in response to uncertain market conditions.

Ethereum Fees Collapse From April Peak

On the flip side, Ethereum’s average transaction fees have seen a significant decline, dropping from $0.72 on April 21 to just $0.095. This represents an 86.8% reduction in transaction costs. This fee reduction can be attributed to several factors, including increased block capacity, the expansion of the gas limit to 60M, and the adoption of Layer-2 scaling solutions such as Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, and Linea. These Layer-2 solutions are now handling high-frequency micro-transactions that previously congested the Ethereum mainnet, thereby alleviating pressure on transaction fees.

Ethereum Fees Create A Cheaper Trading Window

The current low transaction fees on Ethereum present an opportunity for DeFi users to engage in activities such as yield farming, providing liquidity, arbitrage, and MEV hunting with reduced friction. This lower cost environment allows users to rebalance their positions, claim yields, and execute smart-contract transactions more cost-effectively.

However, the shrinking number of USDT wallets remains a key metric to monitor. If the trend of decreasing USDT balances on the mainnet persists while the overall stablecoin market cap remains stagnant, it could pose challenges for altcoin liquidity. At present, Ethereum transaction fees are at multi-month lows, while USDT holders appear to be reducing their exposure to risk, creating a dynamic where the network is balancing between improved cost efficiencies and evolving liquidity behaviors.

In conclusion, Ethereum’s ecosystem is currently experiencing contrasting trends, with decreasing USDT wallets and low transaction fees shaping the network’s dynamics. It will be interesting to see how these developments play out in the coming weeks and how they impact the broader cryptocurrency market.

$420 mln vanished: How Poland’s Venezuelan oil deal exposed USDT loopholes https://bitcoinplatform.com/420-mln-vanished-how-polands-venezuelan-oil-deal-exposed-usdt-loopholes/ https://bitcoinplatform.com/420-mln-vanished-how-polands-venezuelan-oil-deal-exposed-usdt-loopholes/#respond Wed, 16 Sep 2026 01:44:29 +0000 https://bitcoinplatform.com/420-mln-vanished-how-polands-venezuelan-oil-deal-exposed-usdt-loopholes/

Poland’s state-controlled oil refiner Orlen is in the news for all the wrong reasons.

Reports from the Financial Times reveal that the Polish oil company paid a substantial amount in advance for Venezuelan oil, but the promised oil never materialized, resulting in a loss of hundreds of millions of dollars.

The Role of Dubai-based Intermediaries

Orlen operates through subsidiaries like Orlen Trading Switzerland. In late 2023 and early 2024, the subsidiary was in the process of purchasing Venezuelan crude oil. Taking advantage of a temporary relaxation in U.S. sanctions on Venezuelan oil transactions, Orlen Trading Switzerland engaged with two Dubai-based intermediaries for the purchase.

Transactions were facilitated through the conversion of funds into USDT and intermediaries based in Dubai.

The Impact of USDT Payments

Over $132 million in USDT was reportedly transferred through physical USB drives. A conversion of $135 million resulted in only $85 million, with a $50 million shortfall locked in a UAE court. Additionally, around $72 million was spent on shipping costs for tankers that never received the promised oil.

Hannon International Middle East DMCC received approximately $230 million, while Horizon Global received around $100 million. Unfortunately, these payments were made in advance of the oil deliveries that never materialized.

The Influence of U.S. Sanctions

Venezuela’s oil industry has been heavily impacted by U.S. sanctions. While there was a temporary easing of restrictions in October 2023, sanctions were tightened again in April 2024. Orlen had already made payments to Dubai-based intermediaries by this time, leading to a significant loss.

In response to the situation, Polish prosecutors indicted three former Orlen managers in August 2026 for negligent supervision.

Continued Dominance of USDT

Despite the challenges faced in this transaction, Venezuela’s USDT trading on Binance P2P saw a record of $1.4 billion between mid-June and mid-July 2026, with an average daily volume of $44 million. USDT remains a leader in the stablecoin market in terms of transaction volume.

Key Takeaways

  • Orlen suffered significant financial losses due to payments made for undelivered crude oil.
  • The temporary easing of U.S. sanctions on Venezuelan oil transactions played a role in Orlen’s dealings.
