The following is a guest post and an opinion of Hart Lambur, Co-founder of Risk Labs (UMA and Over).
The recent growth of Solana did not come at the expense of Ethereum. It expanded the total crypto user file. Instead of pulling users away from Ethereum, Solana served as a gateway for newcomers to Web3. With fast transactions and low costs, and a lively app layer, it became the ideal onboarding ramp for the latest wave of Memecoin traders.
Seem or not, memecoins like Harrypotterobamasonicinu And Crooked Were not just noise; They introduced millions of people to crypto, many for the first time. Solana was not just where they did their first trade – it was their first real interaction with the web3 -ecosystem. And while many lost money, some of those users kept hanging around.
The question now is: how do we ensure that they stay, and do we experience more of what Web3 offers than speculation? As vitalik said it last year About Memecoins there is a “chance here to try to create a little more positive and for a long time.”
From spectators to residents
This inflow of new users offers a rare opportunity for crypto. At its peak, Solana’s Memecoin Boom helped a market capitalization of $ 47.9 billion. Yes, Memecoins have fallen 76% since their December 2024 all time, but Solana is not only striving for speculation; It has real users and real capital on board. Although the Memecoin-Rage can be short-lived, the participants who attracted it do not have to be.
Crypto has long promised mass adoption and now we have the chance to make that promise come true. But this growth comes with its own series of challenges. If we do not make it easy for new users to navigate through the wider ecosystem – limit their experience to just one blockchain or a single use case – we run the risk of losum, capital and growth that go with it.
The shift from onboarding to retention
Attracting users is no longer the most important challenge. Memecoins on Solana opened that door for a new generation, just like ICOs, Defi Summer and NFTS earlier. The real test is that the wider web3 ecosystem is so seamless and intuitive as the most user-friendly blockchains and use cases. Solana still feels independent of the wider Ethereum ecosystem, just like the various Ethereum L2s that used to feel. If we don’t make it easy for users to explore different ecosystems after the excitement around trends such as Memecoins Fades, we lose them just as quickly as they arrived.
In the past, complicated and duration felt from one chain to another (whether it was Ethereum, Base or another L2) complicated and expensive. It looks a lot like arriving in an exciting new city, please explore, only to realize that the best destinations are difficult to reach due to outdated transit systems. This is how crypto feels today for many users: full of potential, but still weakened by friction at every step. This friction is not inevitable and we now have the tool to remove it.
Crosschain -infrastructure offers the solution
Crosschain infrastructure can offer the solution. Industrie-wide standards such as ERC-7683 Allow Web3 apps to process complex Meerstaps-Cross transactions as a single user request. Written by Over and Uniswap, allows the standard developers to hide the complexity of interaction with multiple chains and still use their combined strength. Users benefit from the best of both worlds: the simplicity of one chain with the scalability of many.
The future is united
The recent user growth of Solana illustrates how UX optimization can stimulate scale. But onboarding is just one side of the comparison – retention is the real test. To really grow web3, it must feel like a seamless ecosystem, not a collection of fragmented networks. In the same way, ERC-7683 and intentions Ethereum L2S must unite, we have to give users the same seamless interactions with Solana.
Ethereum, Solana and every other chain are not in a zero-sum struggle. The future is not about which chain wins. It is about letting web3 work as a uniform, intuitive experience. This means that building infrastructure that connects users quickly, simplifies the complexity and feels the entire ecosystem related. Web3 will only scales when users no longer think of chains, just as nobody thinks of TCP/IP when browsing the internet. That is the future we are building.
