In 2025 the crypto industry will shift from hype to use. Stablecoin-Frameworks take shape, tokenized assets enter mainstream markets and artificial intelligence starts to transactions on-chain.
In the middle of these changes, low-1 block chains are re-defined, not as experiments, but as the infrastructure that drives the Real-World adoption.
“Layer-1’s are still the backbone of the industry,” said Marc Vanlerberghe, Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer at the Algorand Foundation, during this week of Decentralize with Cointelegraph.
“All the other builds them on top. You can endlessly innovate on the edges, but without a safe and scalable basis nothing applies.”
Adoptive obstacles
Despite technical progress, onboarding and retention continue to stick. As Vanlerberghe explained:
“It’s an impossible challenge today. You really have to be, really, really motivated to jump through the hoops and confront the complexity that is crypto.”
That difficulty has prevented many new users from staying with Blockchain apps after their first attempt. To tackle this, projects are experimenting in the ecosystem with gamified campaigns and simplified wallet designs aimed at lowering friction.
“We want people to experience the benefits of using Algorand, not by talking about immediate finality, but by letting people experience it,” said Vanlerberghe.

The way for us
Even while new experiments in the ecosystem unfold as a means to have and retain users on board, he emphasized the importance of resilience and vision.
“You just have to stay … you really have to understand what your North Star is. And that is what you strive for. And because of highlights and lows you just keep progress.”
That North Star for Algorand, according to Vanlerberghe, includes both retail adoption and usual use of company use such as tokenization and payments.
As Tokenized Finance expands and blockchain experiments meet the requirements of the Real-World scale, Laag-1’s position themselves not only to survive, but also to remain essential.
