
The Ministry of the Interior of Kuwait has prohibited Bitcoin mining, with reference to excessive power consumption and violations of national regulations.
In a statement of 22 April, the government warned that crypto -mining activities in the country are unauthorized and violate several existing laws.
The authorities pointed out that crypto -mining criminal law, communication and IT regulations, industrial laws and municipal rules violates Kuwait.
The Ministry continued that these operations put an untenable burden on the electric grid of the nation and possibly threatens public safety.
According to the authorities:
“The Ministry claims that cryptocurrency -mining leads to excessive consumption of electrical energy, which increases the tax on public network and can lead to power failure that influence residential, commercial and service areas that pose a threat to public safety and the regular provision of essential service.”
Consequently, the officials insisted on everyone involved in mining to cease the activities or to have legal consequences.
In the meantime, this latest enforcement action strengthens a broader prohibition issued in 2023 by Kuwait’s Capital Markets Authority, who also banned other crypto-related activities.
However, this renewed warning is a joint initiative in which the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy and other regulatory authorities are involved.
According to them, their collective goal is to prevent infrastructure relegation and to promote responsible energy consumption.
