According to the statement, each validator is still required to make a full replication of the data. As a result, Sui’s current mainnet has a replication factor of 100x or more.
Walrus from Mysten Labs takes this challenge and replaces it on the one hand with very high data availability and robustness and on the other hand with a best-in-class almost minimal 4x-5x replication factor.

Future prospects: Scaling Walrus for decentralized Web3 communities
The protocol provides cost-effective Blob storage, allowing users to upload gigabytes of data at a low cost. This happens because the data blob is transferred across the network once and the storage nodes use only a fraction of the resources relative to the size of the blob.
In addition, Walrus offers greater reliability and availability in the event of failures. Data can still be recovered even if two-thirds of storage nodes crash or are under enemy control.
Walrus can scale horizontally to hundreds or thousands of decentralized storage nodes in a network, powered by the Sui Network. This positions Walrus in a very good place for its future, as the intention is that future updates will make Walrus dynamic to changes in the set of decentralized storage nodes and that a wide rollout to other web3 communities will occur soon.
