- Vitalik Buterin advocates a unique front-end experience, in addition to ZK Proofs in Web3 socials
- Industry leaders have recognized the benefits of ZK Proof in improving privacy and scalability
Ethereum [ETH] Founder Vitalik Buterin leverages the potential of Zero Knowledge (ZK Proof) to improve social media platforms, especially in terms of privacy and scalability.
For perspective, ZK Proof is a cryptographic method that enables authentication with limited data disclosure. This is seen as a game changer, especially in decentralized social protocols based on privacy and trust.
Buterin insists on a better user experience and ZK Proofs
Speaking on the sidelines of ETHCC [7] Brussels, Buterin recognized that the potential of ZK Proofs is crucial to ensure specialized content filtering. The technology allows users to take ownership of their data and control third-party access.
However, the Ethereum co-founder also reiterated that the social protocols above ZK Proof require a unique front-end experience. Buterin cited Farcaster, which is similar to X (formerly Twitter), and Flink, which turns X into a Reddit-like platform. He noticed,
“I think I’m in favor of the benefits of more community architecture and the ability of decentralized social networks to enable that.”
Other panelists from the ETHCC [7]Chris Goes from Anoma, Shumo Chu from Nebra Labs and Elias Tazartes from Kakarot also provided insightful looks at ZK Proofs and Web3 socials.
For example, Chris Goes stated that ZK Proofs offers users more detailed choices about what they want to reveal.
This conflicts with Web 2 socials, which aim to reveal information about users rather than hide it. According to Goes, ZK Proofs goes beyond privacy and makes selective disclosure of information possible.
In addition to improving privacy, ZK Proof technology also requires less computing power to verify large data sets.
This makes it ideal for scalability, especially for social protocols that handle massive transactions. Tazartes even cited the social building platform Web3 Lens protocols new chain, which uses ZK compression for scalability.
For his part, Shumo Chu of Nebra Labs viewed ZK Proofs and Web 3 socials as a great answer to the potential threat of being banned or shadowbanned from Web 2 social media sites.
“As the digital world evolves and more and more of our personal value becomes trapped in it, the potential of being banned on a major platform can more or less ‘erase’ you from the world.”
Decentralized social networks prevent such centralized actions from interfering with user ownership.
Despite the great potential of Web 3 socials, attendees noted that more education is crucial to help people understand the benefits of data ownership and information control.
Besides Farcaster, an X equivalent (former Twitter), there are others Web 3 social media, from professional networks to news feed aggregators.
