An owner of a hard disk who misplaced his huge Trove Bitcoin (BTC) in a British landfill years ago, is now considering buying the dumping ground as a way to recover his funds.
According to a new CNN report, James Howells – a Welshe man who lost his Bitcoin stock worth a stunning $ 800 million after he had accidentally thrown away his storage wallet – is considering getting the landfill after the British government his bid for it have rejected.
Earlier reports indicate that Howells throw away the hard disk in a black plastic trash can in 2013 and thought it was empty. However, the hard drive not only contained $ 9 million in BTC at that time, it also had a record of his private keys, which are needed to gain access to the crypto portion.
In 2021 Howells offered the Newport City Council $ 70 million for permission to dig up the site, but was rejected. In January of this year, a judge rejected his attempts to force the council to allow him to comb the area due to environmental problems.
As the court stated in his decision, according to CNN,
“In principle, the position is no different than what it would be if the record of the private key was written on a piece of paper that was placed in the landfill.”
Earlier this month, a Newport City spokesperson said that will close the landfill in the tax year of 2025-2026.
“The landfill has been in exploitation since the beginning of the 2000s and comes to the end of his life, which is why the council will work on a planned closure and cover of the site for the next two years.”
