The world’s top crypto exchange Binance now faces a Nigerian court on October 11 for tax evasion, according to a local report.
A new Ripples Nigeria report shows that Binance entered a not guilty plea on Friday, and Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, set the new date for the court in October to decide the case after he arguments from both sides had been heard.
The new hearing date gives the judge more time to deliberate on the issues and assess the evidence presented by the parties.
The Nigerian government has charged Binance and two of its executives four times with tax evasion after the platform failed to register with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), the report said.
Binance’s lawyer Ayodele Omotilewa urged the court to dismiss all charges.
In June, tax evasion charges against Binance executives Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla were dismissed. However, both still face money laundering charges, which they deny.
In February, Gambaryan was arrested along with his colleague Anjarwalla, who managed to flee the country. Gambaryan had traveled to Nigeria to participate in regulatory discussions.
Two US lawmakers are introducing a resolution demanding that Nigerian authorities release Gambaryan, a US citizen. If approved, the resolution would also call on the U.S. government to officially declare Gambaryan a “citizen wrongfully detained by a foreign government.”
