The US Department of Justice says that the financial regulation of a terrorist organization has been disrupted after the authorities have seized a considerable amount of the group’s crypto funds.
In a statement, the DOJ announces the seizure of $ 201,400 in USDT in portfolios and bills set up to support the activities of Hamas, the Palestinian armed group that the US, the UK and other countries have designated as terrorist organization.
The funds were stored in accounts registered in the names of Palestinian people who live in Turkey and elsewhere, including three wallets with around $ 111,500 in cryptocurrency and other addresses with assets with a value of around $ 89,900.
The DOJ says that the funds have been traced from alleged Hamas fundraising addresses that were used to launder more than $ 1.5 million in crypto since October 2024.
According to judicial documents, a group chat on a coded communication platform encouraged the supporters of the movement to donate money by sending money to a changing set of at least 17 crypto addresses.
The funds were then led in an operational wallet and washed by a series of crypto fairs and transactions with the help of suspected financiers and freely available brokers.
FBI Special Agent in the lead Raul Bujanda, from the Albuquerque Field Office, says that disturbing the group’s access to the money weakens their ability to function.
“This success shows that financial warfare is a crucial part to combat terrorism. We will continue to do everything in our power to protect the American people and to strive for justice by taking away terrorist organizations about the means they need to continue their illegal activity.”
