The U.S. authorities have taken a significant step by filing a civil forfeiture complaint targeting around $61 million in cryptocurrency associated with the illicit sales of sanctioned Iranian crude oil and petroleum products. The complaint specifically names two Chinese companies, Blessed Trust and Hexa Whale, for their involvement in laundering the proceeds through trading accounts at Binance and channeling them to the Government of Iran, its agents, proxies, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Blessed Trust, masquerading as a wealth management and virtual asset custody firm, was found to be handling funds from Iranian oil sales and assisting clients in converting traditional currency into cryptocurrency through various services. On the other hand, Hexa Whale, posing as a commodities brokerage, provided similar services while collaborating with Blessed Trust and its affiliates. Both firms catered to clients in China’s petroleum and petroleum products industry.
The funds were funneled through a network of unhosted cryptocurrency addresses, known as Entity A, which distributed over $1.5 billion in illicit oil proceeds. Additionally, the Chinese companies utilized the U.S. financial system to transfer tens of millions of dollars as part of their scheme.
Deputy U.S. Attorney Sean S. Buckley emphasized the significance of the action in disrupting the flow of illegal funds to the Government of Iran and its terrorist affiliates. He highlighted how the seized $61 million would have otherwise been used to support hostile military activities and terrorist attacks against the U.S. and its allies.
It is essential to note that the allegations presented in the complaint are yet to be proven in court and remain unverified until a judgment is passed. The authorities are committed to preventing the Government of Iran from accessing funds generated through illicit means to fund their nefarious activities.
